How do you make jewlrey with sea shells?

I would like to know how to sand them, or make them shiny. Also how to make holes in them with out breaking them.

I have some that are shiny but not smooth I wanted to make them more smooth and put then on a string.

How do you make jewlrey with sea shells?
I do lapidary work so i use the same machine that i polish stones to grind and polish shells.

find a gem and mineral club in your area snd see if they have a work shop. Joing the club and they will teach you what you need to know. go to www.amfed.org for a list of clubs in your area
Reply:I don't usually sand the shells I use to make jewelry, but I use a non-yellowing, UVB/UVA protecting polyurethane to make them shiny. I sometimes takes a couple of coats depending on the shell. It also makes the shells easier to keep clean and maintains the shine even when worn a lot or exposed to perfume or lotions or body oils. I do use a very fine bit on my dremmel to make the holes, but first put a tiny piece of painters or masking tape on the shell to protect it while drilling. Sometimes, they will still shatter even when starting the dremmel at a slow speed because the shell is just too thin.
Reply:you polish the shells and string them to a necklace
