How do i dry freshly picked walnuts (still in shells), they are a little wet inside?

First off, are they English or Black walnuts? I don't have any experience with English walnuts. For black walnuts, we usually gather them up and leave them on the ground, where we could drive the car over them to knock off the hull/husk for a couple of weeks. Then on a dry day, we use gloves to pick them up (the hull will stain your hands black-use gloves!) and put them in burlap bags to dry and cure for a couple of weeks. I don't know about drying them in the oven, and personally I don't think I'd like the smell. If you want to store the nuts, they can be put into the freezer or an un-used unheated room. You don't want to put them where squirrels or other varmints can carry them away!!

Put them in a single layer on the bottom shelf of an oven turned on low for several hours. Leave the door slightly ajar.

Crack one open every so often to check that they are dry.

Remove from oven and allow to cool and then store in a cool dry place. Lucky you for being able to get fresh walnuts. Mum and I would love to have some.
Reply:Just leave them in a basket for a few days in a dry place

You can eat them as they are. If they are a bit bitter, just crack it and then remove the greenish peel from the not itself
Reply:if you still have some good sun over there, you can place the nuts on a flat surface (baking pan or something like that) and let them all day under the sun to dry, taking the precaution to put them inside at night or they might re absorb the humidity from the environment and rotten.

Do this for several days in a row (4 or 5 days) and then keep them in an airtight container in a cool dry place, dark if possible. Light affects the delicate oils of the nuts.

You can also dry them in the oven by placing them for long periods of time 2 or 3 hours at min temp and with the door slightly opened.
Reply:You can build your own dehydrator:

Get a box fan, bungee cords, and AC filters. Put the nuts between the filters and bungee the stack to the box fan. Run the fan for a few days and the nuts will dry out.
Reply:Don't bother - just eat them. They are much nicer than the dried sort.
