What are ocean shells really?

Were they once fish? I have them in my house and it never occured to me before if something used to live in the shells.

What are ocean shells really?
Mostly they are the shells of mollusks same phylum as clams scallops and snails.

Some, startfish, sea urchins, and sand dollars, are echinoderms.
