I have 3 hermit crabs I got about 1 month ago, and 1 is ready for a new shell. I am worried about whether to get them painted or natural shells. Also, can you give me some links to good, legitimate, websites where I can order shells. Thanks
Are painted or natural shells better for hermit crabs?
Natural shells only. Painted shells are death traps for hermit crabs. Don't even get me started on " paint your own shell" kits.
Hermit crabs rather natural shells any way.
Painted shells chip and the chips can become lodged in the animals gills. They can eat the chips which are toxic to them. Even if the pain is Non- toxic it is toxic to a hermit crab.
the paint can become tacky when exposed to proper hermit crabs conditions. This means a hermit crab can become stuck in it's own shell. This is bad news for a hermit crab.
Here is a video of the making of painted shells. Note the naked crab being forced into it. http://www.cnn.com/video/#/video/offbeat...
not to mention painted shells make crabs look like toys. Kids buy them thinking they are cute and then let them die in plastic boxes.
the best place to buy shells is a craft store. Lots of natural shells at good prices. you may also want to try http://www.thecrabbagepatch.com/
Reply:AL'LA NATURAL
There is a place in Sarasota, Florida, but i cannot remember the name.
Florida Marine Research...maybe
and ebay
Reply:There the same but always natural is better!!!
Reply:I just got hermit crabs myself and I've heard the the painted shells are harmful to the crabs.
Reply:Natural.
You never know what kind of metals were used in that paint; it might be toxic for the hermit crabs.
Reply:natural shells are much better for hermit crabs many crabs will chose natural shells over painted shells any day , that is why many hermit crabs are forced into a painted shell, the paint is also harmful to them, if they eat it there is a good chance the crab will die. They are sold solely to market them to small children.
Reply:I don't know any links but the painted shells are the same as the normal 1s
