My hermit crab keeps switching shells?

My smaller hermit crab (I have 2) switches his shell often. He changes from his new one, back to the old one almost every day! I put a variety of all size shells in the crabitat for both of them, I have actually watched him go from his new shell, back to the old one with the daytime light on. I thought they only did this after molting and in darkness? He's only doing it with one new shell and his old one, but theres about 6 other shells in there. I was just wondering is this normal behavior?

Switching shells is a good thing. It means you have given them lots of nice shells and they feel safe in their environment.

Watching shell changes is cool isn't it. I love watching mine do it because their little bums are so funny.

if you have purple pincers/ caribbean land hermit crabs this is very common. They change a lot especially if you put in new shells. They go back and forth then settle into a shell they like for a while.

This is normal.
Reply:i work in a pet store and had hermit crabs myself that is so normaly for them to do that they will keeping doing it unitl they find one they like you may have to get more shells
Reply:Sometimes they just don't feel safe in their shell and keep trying till they find one they are comfotyable with.
Reply:i've had hermit crabs often switch shells before as well. its kinda creepy to see what they look like without their shell on in my opinion. but just make sure your hermit crabs don't have mites or some other parasite that may be bothering the little guy. hermit crabs can be prone to getting mites. and clean out the shells they aren't using.
Reply:I think it is pretty normal, because maybe it cant just get right.. it may want to find the perfect spot lol. or maybe it is trying to decide which one has better "appeal" lol hope i helped =)
Reply:eww thats grose hes probably trying to find a shell that he likes
