Can you have popcorn without the shells? If so, how?

i'm just wondering if there's any way to take the shell off of the kernels before you pop it so you won't have the hard shells that stick in between the gums and teeth after they've popped...i'm just curious whether it's possible or not...

Can you have popcorn without the shells? If so, how?
No, if you take off the "shells", then the popcorn won't pop. The way it works, when you heat the kernels of popcorn, the moisture inside converts to steam. The "shell", actually called the pericarp by botanists, holds in the steam until POP! It explodes, and the escaping steam puffs up the inside (called the endosperm) unto a fluffy yummy bit of popcorn.

Take off the pericarp, and what you get is soggy corn mush.

I don't like those bits in my teeth, either, but it's worth it for the tasty goodness of the popcorn. I think I'll go make some right now.
Reply:it is not possible.... but I can guess why you ask....

One thing I do not like about popcorn is that you gotta floss after you eat it or you go crazy....

Have you ever had RICE CAKES???

there is a product just like it that is made from corn and taste just like popcorn and does not have the kernals..... CORN CAKES!!!!!

try them.... you'll like them
Reply:some of the popcorn for microwave does not have it. though, i cannot figure out how, because, in order to make such a shape, the inside of popcorn expands, and breaks the shel...
Reply:Its not possible because the "shell" your referring to is actually the kernal which is what pops to make popcorn. Just floss after eating it like I do...lol
Reply:cut em in half
Reply:Nope it is not possible. It is, in fact, the unusually hard shell of the "popcorn" type of corn which makes it possible to pop the corn in the first place. If the shell (kernel) wasn't so hard it wouldn't be able to withstand the pressure of the expanding water long enough fo the corn to pop. Popcorn is actually its own type of corn, just like sweet, field, indian, etc...
