Is it safe to put egg shells down the disposal? I heard it sharpens the blades. True?

Egg shells will not sharpen hardened steel. If you have a septic system then do not put shells in disposal. My experience has been if you put to many in at once it clogs the drain pipe. One or two will go down fine. More than that use the trash or feed them slowly.

NO .put the egg shells out in you flower beds(or in your compost)to help them grow
Reply:As far as being safe to put down the disposal... absolutely! The rule of thumb is generally if you can bite it, the disposal can take it. I wouldn't say if you can eat it, because who would eat egg shells? Gross... Also, as far as sharpening blades, I have heard that ice cubes can keep your blades in good shape. I have never had a problem with egg shells or ice cubes. Avoid the stringy items, they'll tangle the blades and shaft.
Reply:as far as sharpen the blades i dont think so and having a disposal is wonderful and if you are going to put potatoe peelings or any thing else you have to go slow. I have put everything down mine but i take it slow to. You listen to the diposal and you can tell if it is getting to much to chop everything up and if so you just back up for a while and as far as i know i have lived there for 5 yrs and have not had my pipes pluged up or anything. So you determin what is safe and what is not.
Reply:I've always put the shells in the disposal and never had any problems...only things that shouldn't go in there are stringy items like celery. Oh, and my friend broke their disposal by putting alot of potato peelings down it.
Reply:i heard it was ok. i doubt it would do anything to the blades - good or bad. egg shells arent tough or hard enough to really hurt or benefit anything. (?) the only thing i was told to NOT put down the disposal was long, tough, stringy stuff - like onions. they can get hooked and clog your pipes etc. i think egg shells are ok.
Reply:I agree with the prior poster, potato peelings will kill a disposal better than anything. Our plumber also said not to put down egg shells, or noodles, but the noodles because they will clog pipes even after going through the disposal. I don't believe for a minute that eggshells will sharpen the blades. What they can do is the tiny hard pieces of shell can lodge in the seams of the disposal and eventually cause problems. Best way to use disposal: run hot water before and during use while putting down small amounts of food at a time. Oh, and we replaced the old disposal with the top of the line Insinkerator disposal, says it will even liquefy chicken bones, and it also takes the waste from the dishwasher and grinds it to protect our pipes. And the cost difference wasn't important to us...it was still under $300 for something we use every day.
Reply:#RULE OF THUMB

Only put in a garbage disposal what you eat. It eats what you eat. Anything else will damage it in the long run.
Reply:Egg shells won't sharpen the blade, but they will sure as heck clog the pipe. Try putting 3 or 4 shells after breakfast and enjoy the plumbers visit.

Crush them up and throw into the garden or shrubs. Earthworms will digest the pieces and add to soil activity.
Reply:Fragile egg shells will not sharpen stainless steel. You can put just about anything down your disposal, that you can sink your teeth into. The key is to get a 3/4 hp or bigger if you are going to make it challenging. Make sure you run 20 to 30 seconds of water to flush it through the drainage system. I just cut up watermelon rinds a put it down my pipes, don't shove it all at once and you wont need to call someone like myself....A Plumber. But if you do have a garden or even a flower bed toss them in there it is great compost.
Reply:I don't know where you live but here in Canada all organic waste is composted. They provide the containers, one for the house %26amp; one for outside. They pick them up weekly.I myself use all organic material in the garden.
Reply:I've never had problems with putting egg shells down the disposal. I can't speak on whether it sharpens the blades, but it didn't have any adverse effect.
