Why are the egg shells white in the US and brown in the UK and some parts of Europe?

While you can find brown eggs in the US, they are indeed rare. Europeans generally are more enlightened than the average American, and don't mind buying brown eggs, unlike Americans who frequently and ignorantly think they are less clean.

Why are the egg shells white in the US and brown in the UK and some parts of Europe?
I was told that the white eggs are bleached, but I'm not sure if I believe that. But, we do have brown eggs here. And sometimes green ones!
Reply:there are brown ones in the US too.
Reply:There are brown eggs everywhere! I have seen them all over the US. It just depends on the kind of chicken.
Reply:Because the US is racist against brown eggs
Reply:white hens lay white eggs, brown hens lay brown eggs, they are both everywhere
Reply:Leg Horn chickens are prolific egg layers, some lay up to two eggs a day and they do well in large egg production farms. Aracuana chickens have eggs that are in a shade of green. A lot of other chickens, while not as efficient as the leg horn chickens, are calmer and easier to raise. These include Rhode Island Reds, Buff Orpington's, and many others. The eggs a chicken lays will be similar in color as the pigment on their legs. The feed they eat does not play a role in the color of the eggs. I have many different chickens all eating the same food and we get many different shades of eggs. The color of your eggs at the supermarket is determined by what type of chicken is laying them and what the farmers in that area are raising.
Reply:i just bought brown eggs. i live in the states.
Reply:There are brown ones in the US as well. I buy them all the time.
Reply:Wallaem is right. There are on the number of about 50000:1 white laying chickens to brown laying chickens in the US. Alot of alleged "Free-range" chicken eggs are brown just to contrast against the white ones.

Farm-fresh eggs will usually have a mix of brown/white eggs in a dozen.
Reply:there are white and brown egg shells everywhere...
Reply:the shell colour depends on the feed of the chicken,we get white ones here you just have to shop around
Reply:we can get brown and white shelled eggs here in the U.S. I think it has something to do with the type of chicken laying the eggs
