Why does name of the shells of atoms start with k not with a?
Likely a series of letter designations was needed where none of the letters would easily be confused with another popular use. For example the first seven letters a through g would include g which is used by physicists to designate gravity. X, y and z are often used to designate unknowns or the axes of coordinates. Letter I is often avoided because it is a Roman numeral. Still when discussing (say) P, it must be made clear that it is defined as an electron shell to avoid confusion with (say) power as in P = EI.
Reply:The electron shells K and L were originally named B and A but were later renamed in order to leave room for further discoveries but none were made.
Reply:It may be because of the language of the scientist that discovered it. Hence Tungsten being abbreviated by a "W" since it was founded in Germany. It is called Wolfsten there, or something close.

Or it could be because there is something else science related that starts with an "a." Which is why ampere is abrreviated "amp" instead of "a"

Or it can be because "a" is a word.

Just some ideas, may not be correct.
