Are turtles shells supposed to peel?

i have a painter turtle and i know they shed, but the sections of its shell are peeling off individually. im not sure if its supposed to do that. it is only 1 1/2 inch turtle so is its shell just growing? and thats what it does?

Are turtles shells supposed to peel?
Each scute will shed independently. To make sure everything is OK, check these details out:

- paper thin sheds, not thick or fingernail like.

- Tissue under sheds should look like the normal shell, not different than the others.

- Under the shed should be clean- no discoloration, discharge, or odor.

Reply:as they grow segments of shell peel off like a thumbnail size piece. be sure turtle has area to get out of water so it can bask in the heat and keep it's shell hard. otherwise sometimes a serious issue of shell rot can occur. get a book at the local pet store and read up some on your turtle.
Reply:Yes it means he is growing. The peeling is normal and analogous to a snake or a lizard shedding it skin. Just make sure they have room to get out of the water and on to dry land.
Reply:Yes it is supposed to peel individually. It is normal.
Reply:yes they are supposed to peel
Reply:yes, their shell molts to let the shell grow
Reply:IM NOT SURE BECAUSE THE SHELL IS LIKE AN EXOSKELOTON. THIS MEANS IT SKELOTON IS N THE OUTSIDE
