I've heard that egg shells will damage a garbage disposal. Is this true?

We are connected to a municipal sewer system.

I've heard that egg shells will damage a garbage disposal. Is this true?
garbage disposal can dispose any food.

potato skins and egg shells certainly arent enough to damage it. ive put whole ears of corn, plenty of potato skins and egg shells all in one day, when making enough food to feed a party of 70 ppl!!

nothing happened and nothing will.
Reply:Not at all. They crumble down to nothing in the disposal.
Reply:no way. eggs shells are so fragile. like the other person said, what good is a garbage disposal if an egg shell will break it? i put egg shells in mine all the time and don't even get so much as a sound.
Reply:If something as frangible as egg shells can damage the garbage disposal, then it can be much good, can it?
Reply:not at all
Reply:Recently my wife stayed at a cabin where a sign read to help with the septic tank, please don't use the garbage disposal for eggs shells, coffee grounds (and it listed other items).

She asked me why that might be bad for the disposal and I said it wasn't the egg shells or grounds that'd damage the disposal (at least those with enough power from what I've read), but it's to help the septic tank. I'm not sure what problems it causes, but it seems the grinder minces these items unnecessarily small and speeds up the waste removal which costs money each time.

She wasn't convinced and so here I am looking it up this morning. Below is from a quick search I just did. So I think you're fine since you're connected to a municpal system like us. In the meantime, I'm going to keep grinding the shells because that's all I've ever known (passed down through the generations of mom and grandma) and they never had a problem.

* Garbage disposals will speed up the frequency with which tank pumping is necessary.

* Avoid putting certain items down the drain including fats, oils, grease, egg shells, coffee grounds, facial tissues and cigarette butts. They do not decompose in the septic tank and take up valuable sludge storage capacity.
Reply:no but do not put foregin waste inthe disposal
Reply:I believe this to be true, although, it depends on the h.p (horsepower) of the garbage disposal you have. But you can call your local water supply company to find out for sure. I do know putting ice cubes does sharpen the blades.
Reply:Depends I have a small horsepower garbage disposal and it cannot tolerate egg shells, coffee grinds, ears of corn, watermelon skin etc. . . if you have an muscle garbage disposal it can handle anything. Commonly in houses you have my type wich if treated right will last forever!
Reply:I've actually heard that it sharpens the blades.
Reply:A plumber told me that it's the combination of egg shells and coffee grounds. They make something like cement together. He said that you can put egg shells in the disposer as long as you never put coffee grinds. He also said not to worry about glass; that it actually sharpens the blades.
Reply:yes, it's true. the lining of an egg can get wrapped around the blades of the disposal...like wilted lettuce. also don't put potato skins in there either!! I did that about 6 months ago...what a mess!!!!
