Is it safe to provide pet hermit crabs with shells found on the beach?

or do you HAVE to buy them from a pet store???? I understand I would have to boil them to prevent any parasites from infecting the crabs.... but i was just wondering if its okay to use shells in good condition that were found.

Is it safe to provide pet hermit crabs with shells found on the beach?
I don't see a problem with that if you boil the shells, it will kill all the parasites if any. It should be safe to do, I did that with mine and they turned out just fine. Good question! -James
Reply:he died a couple months later. Not from the shells though. Best of luck to you and thank you for the best answer rating! Report It
Reply:Isn't that where hermit crabs would get them anyway?
Reply:NO! The shells can carry diseases that could kill the crab.
Reply:I would clean them well and then make sure to rinse them extra well. Be sure there is a few different sizes and shapes that is slightly to much bigger provided so the can choose. Ive known them to come outta the shell to move and cant find a suitable one and lay there and die. The ones from the beach should be ok, as long as they are similar to the one its in.
Reply:just clean them and you will be fine
Reply:Hello..I suppose you could, but you need varied sizes so the Hermit carb can decide which one he needs %26amp; if everyone did take them from the beaches, what will the other hermit crabs use, sure your only taking one or 2, but if everyone only takes one or 2, next thing you know the natural wild Hermit crab many not have one..seriously, think about how many people have hermit crabs %26amp; you need several sizes, so best %26amp; safest for all is to buy them for your store bought hermits...Take Care :)
