Is it ok to put coffee grinds and egg shells in your garbage disposal?

My landlord at my last apartment told me that I broke the disposal by putting eggshells and coffee grinds. I own a house now and don't want to do any damage.

Is it ok to put coffee grinds and egg shells in your garbage disposal?
I just asked my boyfriend he has been a plumber for 15 years.

Do

not grind large bones, or fibrous materials as corn husks With fibrous foods (celery,

chard, asparagus ends, etc.) put through only a small

amount at a time with a full flow of water.

Do not put uncooked fat off meat into disposer as it

may clog. nut shells, and the like can stop up the units.
Reply:NO! I had to pump my entire system because the last tenant did this! It cost me over $400. Listen, this is great for your compost pile or the garbage, but not in your disposal. Disposals are really not good places for any of what they tell you, not only that but most of this stuff ends up in your dishwasher. Be sure to run alot of water, too, if you do put anything down the disposal!
Reply:Not sure about egg-shells but coffee grinds? - No! Also no starchy stuff like rice, pasta down that. Over time they cause serious clogs that has to be the roto-routed at 100+$ cost. Grease is also a No. Best thing to do is to periodically dump some baking soda and run hot water through it. Vinegar also helps.
Reply:I would say eggshells are fine (I do it all the time), but coffee grounds absolutely not! I have blocked my disposal by putting coffee grounds into it.
Reply:It has never hurt mine and I have had it for 11 years
Reply:I don't put anything in mine. Well, I take that back. about once a month I put ice cubes and baking soda in it to clean it out from the bits of food off the plates when we put them in the sink. I had nothing but plumbing problems when we first bought this house and a plumber friend of mine told me NEVER use the stupid thing.

I now put egg shells and coffee gounds in the compost pile and grow a nice bunch of veggies.
Reply:I put those two items down our disposal all the time, it's never hurt ours? I was told by our maintenance guy that it's the fiberous things like carrots, celery etc. that cause things to get clogged up eventually... Oh yeah and the metal things like rings (happened here once) and silverware that ya gotta watch out for!

8-)
Reply:i do no problem with mine
Reply:Why not toss'em in a composter instead? Stuff like that makes a great fertilizer in a few months. As to your Q, egg shells yes, coffee grounds no.
Reply:No eggs shells clog the system. As for coffee grounds put them around your plants! Also no onion peels in disposal
Reply:I've never had a problem with egg shells, but I've heard that coffee grounds can dull the blades.

When in doubt...don't do either.
