How do you disinfect shells after the crab has died?

I want the shell to be clean just in case one of the other crabs wants to use the old shell. Is there a safe method to disinfect the crab shell?

Bleach and boiling work well, but I have used an easier method. I place the dead animal's shell on top of a fire ant mound. The fire ants take about 2-3 days to clean everything out of the deepest parts of the shell. This way you can be sure all the dead tissue is removed from it.
Reply:Bleach will disinfect the shell but if it is not throughly rinsed could be dangerous to another crab that may utilize it. I would recommend boiling.
Reply:Boil it and let it dry thoroughly.
Reply:bleach....works perfectly...and, no, it won't take the shell's colour out.
