If you don's have a Dremel tool, you can use a very small regular drill bit. Just be sure you have it flat against a firm surface (wood block) when you begin to drill or it will crack the shell. I did this for many years until I discovered the Dremel tool.
How do I make holes in sea shells in order to make a necklace?
A dremmel type hand drill with either a carbide (grinding) tip, and a high speed, or a very fine Glass/tile drill will work.
I have heard you can "burn" a hole into them using a fine pointed soldering Iron, but don't know how well it works, or the smell.
Reply:get a small power tool made by dremel or something similar. they have small diameter diamond carbide drill tips and a 10,000 RPM motor. it will drill through a beer bottle if you want to, and is very handy for small repairs and crafts.well worth the 50 dollar price tag.
Reply:use a very fine drill, like a small dremel tool or equivalent
Reply:you can pierce a shell with a fine solder iron or wire .
Also a fine drill or awl can be used
with the smaller shells the solder iron usually does the job
i love shells and they look great in a necklace
I use the tiniest shells as spacers.,
though pearls or glass beads are nice too
:o)
