How do i know when my hermit crab is ready to switch shells?

io just got a land crab about a week ago and was wondering when and where to get bigger shells?

How do i know when my hermit crab is ready to switch shells?
Hermit crabs grow very slowly. In order to grow they moult shed their exoskeleton, this is done many times in a year if they are small or twice or three times if they are larger.

A hermit crab depending on the species may will to change shells quite frequently. When they feel safe and shells are around Caribbean land hermit crabs switch quite often.

You should get 3 extra shells for every crab. ( there should be more then one they are highly social animals) The best place I find to get shells is the craft store. You can get natural shells at far better prices then pet stores. Make sure the shell is close to the size and shape of the current shell. Measure the opening and try to get shells close in opening size. Make sure you boil the shells in aquarium salted water then let them cool before adding them to the tank.

Never buy painted shells. Painted shells harm and kill crabs. Not to mention they look hideous.
Reply:like when u see a lot more of its body out that normal. u shuld get a bigger shell and always have that extra in the cage/tank incase it grows out of its body
Reply:You should have bought a few when you bought the crab just run out and grab a couple sometimes they like to switch shells even when they dont need too good luck :)
Reply:you should always keep different size shell in the cage w/ him

they know when they want a another shell bigger smaller or the same size
