How do you clean already preserved sea shells without drying them out.?

Soak them in your sink with liguid dish washing soap and then scrub them gently with a small kitchen brush. Let air dry or day them with a paper tower. They will look clean as new.

How do you clean already preserved sea shells without drying them out.?
Just wash with warm water and dry,Do not soak.
Reply:If they're already preserved, how are they preserved? If it's with a clear lacquer, such as nail polish, then they should just wash in soap [not detergent] and water - or scrub them with a little salt. If they're not already preserved, just scrub them with salt, rinse them and then apply a lacquer.
Reply:soak in hot water and air dry

How many energy shells have electrons in them in a silicone atom?

An electron/energy shell, is a group of atomic orbitals with the same value of the principal quantum number n.

Thus in a silicon atom (1s^2 2s^2 2p^6 3s^2 3p^2) the number of energy shells with electrons in them is 3.

(just for info: There are 5 occupied subshells (1s, 2s, 2p, 3s, 3p) and 8 occupied orbitals 1s 2s 2px 2py 2pz 3s 3px 3py, out of which the first 6 have 2 electrons and 3px and 3py have one electron each; Hund's rule doesn't allow an electron pair in 3px while the other 3p orbitals are empty)

How many energy shells have electrons in them in a silicone atom?
Well its electron configuration is 1s^2 2s^2 2p^6 3s^2 3p^2.

I would say that 7 energy shells have electrons in them.

Although I might be confused with energy shells. It might be that 7 orbitals have electrons in them and and just 5 energy shells have electrons in them?
Reply:You did mean silicon (Z=14) right?

Otherwise I might say two, but Pauli would say one. Silicone energy levels that is. Silicone.

Hund's rule. Now that's funny. unfilled s-shells and all that. How can it be a "rule"? It's just a guide. Silly silly scientists and engineers believing their textbooks like a gift from God.

Suggestion: THINK. :)

How many electrons does carbon have, and how are they divided on the shells?

Carbon has six electrons. Hence, using the 1s, 2s, 2p notation for atomic orbitals, the electrons are divided up as follows: -

The 1s shell has two electrons

The 2s shell has two electrons

The 2p shell has two electrons.

How many electrons does carbon have, and how are they divided on the shells?
carbon has six electrons which are divided into two shells.

in the inner shell there are two electrons and in the outer shell there are four electrons.
Reply:The number of electrons that carbon has can be deduced by looking at its proton number. Carbon's proton number is 6. In any element, the 1st shell consists of only 2 electrons as well as in carbon. Thus, only 4 electrons remains. The 2nd and following shells can have a max number of 8 electrons. So, the 2nd shell of carbon has the remaining 4 electrons. Also%26gt;refer to its electronic configuration...
Reply:The number of electrons an element has is the same as its atomic number. Carbon is 6, so it has 6 electrons.

The first shell can have 2, then next one can have 8, so carbon will be 2,4.

2 spinning in opposite direction in a level one 's' orbital, then another 2 oppositely spinning in a level 2 's' orbital, then 2 spinning in the same direction in a level 2'p' orbital.

this is better shown by

1s(2), 2s(2), 2p(2)

What iz the prize if u get all the sea salt and sea shells or sumtin on pokemon sapphire?
heal bell, pokemon holds it and each turn it recovers a little bit of health, if you have free time go for it, I'd just use potions or berries, much easier to get, or even the item "leftovers" it recovers HP as well. No, doesnt help catch Rayquaza.

Why does my hermit crab keep changing shells multiple times a day?

Every day he will leave one shell go to another go back to the one he was in try out another

he is crazy any help?????

Why does my hermit crab keep changing shells multiple times a day?
Maybe the shells you have are too small.

try bigger shells for your crab
Reply:sounds like he can't find the right size shell, try this:

1) if the shells are very different in size (meaning one too big and one too small) then try to get a shell sized in between

2) if the shells are the same size, or close, then try getting a bigger shell

good luck
Reply:They'll do that. Just make sure there's a wide variety of shells available so he can find one that he likes.
Reply:get more shells
Reply:My crab does that sometimes. He is looking for a shell with a better fit I suppose, but sometimes I think he's just enjoying himself (like how a woman may try on lots of clothes just for the heck of it). Don't worry, your crab behavior is normal.

What causes salt water shells to be the color and shape that they are?

Due to cytoplasmic inheritance.

How long do I need to let these mini thin pasta shells boil?

I'm answering at the 2 minute mark. I'd say another 6 minutes max.

Deep oceanic areas receive the shells of floating plankton, making their sediments silica-rich?

A. false, silica is dissolved at the cold temperatures found there

B. false, there are actually very few floating organisms with shells

C. true, thick limestone deposits are formed in the deep ocean

D. true, deep ocean sediments are silica-rich

oh siliceous ooze, can't you just imagine walking through the slimy stuff, squirting between your toes. yech. Fortunately we don't walk on the ocean bottom much. The answer would be D.

How do i put cowrie shells on a hemp necklece?
you will have to very carefully drill a hole big enough to thread the hemp through. ask someone who has a drill if they can do it or ask at a hardware store the best type of drill bit to use and ask their advice on how to do it successfully. slow and carefully should work, don't put pressure on the shell. hope this helps
Reply:Have you tried doing a search for jewelry making tutorials? I had a friend that made cowrie shell chokers but he passed away a few years ago.

Lol im getting mixed up here. which is the nicest - crunchy taco shells or soft tortilla 'authentic' tacos?

Both are delicious, but i like soft corn torillas grilled on a hot oiled griddle or pan. Fill them with diced (not ground) beef and minced onion, top with fresh cillantro and maybe a touch of fresh homemade salsa. Guadalahara style, just like the taqueria back home makes.

Crunchy tacos are good too, but you can get a crunchy shell filled with ground or minced beef anywhere. Even as fast-food. By the way, did you know that Taco Bell started as a Hot dog and hamburger stand that only sold tacos as a novelty? Glen Bell was surprised to find that the tacos sold better than the "American" food, and the rest is history.

Lol im getting mixed up here. which is the nicest - crunchy taco shells or soft tortilla 'authentic' tacos?
old el paso (if thats how you spell it) stand 'n' stuff taco shells rock. they stand up so you dont have to hold them, they fit more in and they have the best flavour!
Reply:Which one is "nicer" depends upon your tastes! I'm not a big fan of holdign a soggy floru tortilla w/ hot stuff rolled up into it, so I prefer corn/crispy. But if the flour tortilla is fried (and is therefore crispy), I'll take it.
Reply:i prefer soft.
Reply:you can layer them with beans spread between them to make a taco bravo or I myself fry flour tortillas in a little bit of oil to make them crunchy.
Reply:My daughter and I prefer the crunchy taco shells and my husband prefers the soft tortillas, so when I make a taco bar, I have both on hand.
Reply:You can make a combo! I usually have both around so my guests can pick and choose :)

If using corn shells (hard) make sure to heat them for 5 minutes at 350F to crisp up.

If using soft flour tortillas, place them on a plate and cover with a damp paper towel. Microwave for 30 seconds or a minute until heated.

Can you freeze chicken eggs when they are out of their shells?

Yes you can. Just make sure you add a tiny pinch of salt to each egg yolk before freezing, or they thicken and won't be as good.

Can you freeze chicken eggs when they are out of their shells?
You can, but I have no idea why you would want to. If usage is a problem, just buy 6 eggs. They are still good 30 days past the sell by date.
Reply:i think the same goes with peas when they're out of their pods
Reply:You can, but you can't leave the yolks whole.

Yolks don’t take to freezing very well. They become very gelatinous and you usually mix separated yolks with a bit or salt or sugar before you freeze them to keep them from turning to rubber (and you label them well so you don’t have to guess if you mixed them with salt or with sugar). Raw egg whites do not suffer from freezing (cooked egg whites are very rubbery after freezing).

If you’re going to freeze whole eggs, remove them from the shells, and mix them well before freezing. They can be kept frozen for a year, and should be thawed in the refrigerator the day before you intend to use them. You might try freezing a few eggs and see if the results are acceptable to you.
Reply:yep, freezer ice trays work perfectly for this

Why are egg shells in the u.k and australia a beige colour, but in the u.s they are white?

you can get brown and white eggs in the US, i use brown

Why are egg shells in the u.k and australia a beige colour, but in the u.s they are white?
We have beige and white in Australia.
Reply:beige just means they are natural. their actually brown. you can get them at your supermarket
Reply:Most I eggs I buy in the US are brown too....
Reply:Different breeds of chickens lay different colors of eggs. I have Aracanas that lay green eggs, I had a Rhode Island Red that layed brown eggs, my black chickens all lay brown but I had a black chicken with a ploom on top of it's head that layed white eggs.

Generally the eggs you purchase in the store are from white layers. If you ever watch the Discovery channel, on occasion they will show a chicken farm with rows and rows of chickens in cages busy eating and laying eggs. I don't know if the white ones just happen to lay more eggs a year that their counterparts or why white is chosen.

In the "good old days" they just had all-purpose chickens that had a lot of meat on their bones and still layed a lot of eggs. When they quit laying - they went in the stew pot.

Today they've bread them so the layers are very thin built - not much meat on them, and the fryers are very large and grow fast. The layers grow slowly to maturity.

Did you know the fryer chickens you buy in the store (all the chicken parts and whole chickens) are no older than 4 to 5 weeks? The fryers grow that fast. I had a fryer that we kept around to 7 weeks and it weighed dressed (cleaned, innards and feathers removed) 11 pounds. It was almost as big as a turkey and yet it was a regular fryer chicken.
Reply:it is the breed of chicken (hens) that they use. I have 2 chooks the white one lays white eggs, my black one lays darker brown eggs and the red one lays light brown eggs, so we always know who is laying eggs at our place.
Reply:i think it depends on the "grade' or something like that

ex. grade a eggs, grade b eggs
Reply:we have rasist chickens.
Reply:depends on the color of the chicken. white chickens produce white eggs, brown chickens produce brown eggs.
Reply:There are a few different factors that play in. Mostly the breed of the chicken. Some types of chickens even lay blue-green eggs!
Reply:Different breed of birds?

Saltwater Tanks - How do I clean shells I find locally? Steralize?

I want to steralize a couple shells I found locally and put them in my reef tank. How do I steralize them so they do not have any bacteria?

Saltwater Tanks - How do I clean shells I find locally? Steralize?
To be totally honest I wouldn't do it due to the risk of introducing a parasite or disease into the reef tank, but if you are willing to take the risk....

First I would suggest you allow them to dry completely and give them a sniff to be sure there is no dead and rotting animal still in the shell. Assuming there is not then a good scrubbing with a clean brush and a short boil will clean them up enough for use in your tank. Be sure the boiling water reaches as far into the shell as possible and again allow it to dry for several days before using. Your biggest single danger is introducing parasites or other disease causing organisms into the tank, boiling and then completely drying the shells will help limit this risk.

MM
Reply:Boil them. It kills bacteria, but you can hardly expect them not to have any bacteria at all.
Reply:Use salt and a brush to clean dirt off. Boil, or cook in a hot oven. It works for large and small rocks you want to use, too.
Reply:welll i just rinse with cold water then let them sit in boiling water then finally rinse with cold water agian and stick them in!
Reply:Boil them on the stove. I've done that with rocks and stuff from our backyard and had no problem.

What is cheaper 12 ga or 20 ga shotgun shells?

And what is best for skeet shooting?

What is cheaper 12 ga or 20 ga shotgun shells?
About the same price. 12ga Promo loads can usually be found slightly cheaper at the Big Mart stores.

Either one is fine for skeet. You can shoot light loads out of a 12ga so the recoil will not cause fatigue after a lot of rounds. Even though you can shoot a lighter load of shot out of a 20ga, the shotgun will usually be lighter, so the recoil will be about equal. Go with what you like. A 20 gauge will be more slim than a 12 ga so you might like the lines of the gun better.

As for shell use a light target load with #9 shot for skeet. If you shoot trap, use #8 as the clays will be farther away, and the larger pellets will have more momentum at long range.
Reply:They are about the same price but some addvice if you see slugs or shot shell for sale not during the hunting season buy them because alot of places go up on slugs and even run out of them around deer season
Reply:where I live (Central Ontario) 12 gauge shells are cheaper, but not by much.
Reply:Both are the same in price.* 12 gauge is best for skeet or Trap, using AA Brand in 71/2 or 8 shot size shells.*
Reply:20 guage 100 rds. for $17,00
Reply:About the same.
Reply:they are about the same price if you buy them at the store, but if you reload, 20 guage is cheaper
Reply:Same price shells, I use a 20 for clay just so I don't feel the recoil as much and my shoulder don't tire as fast.

What is considered proper etiquette regarding sunflower seed shells?

Keep them in your napkin so others can't see the shells. And avoid putting the shells in your mouth or putting your fingers in your mouth.

What is considered proper etiquette regarding sunflower seed shells?
I think...

if you pick up one,

crack it open with your front teeth,

then remove the edible seed, place that into your mouth,

discard the shell into a disposable napkin,

No one will think the worst.
Reply:Eating them all alone in the privacy of your own home/room.......I've never figured out a way to graciously eat sunflower seeds in public........but whatever you do, DON'T spit the shells on the ground or floor. Stick them in your pocket if you have to, but keep those shells out of sight.
Reply:Proper in my mind would be to open them with your fingers, toss them in the garbage. Simple and common sense, right?

Obviously not to everyone. I see people spitting them out of their mouths right onto the ground where everyone walks.

Gross!

I have a mossberg 500 and both the shot and slug barrel say they can use 2 3/4 and 3 inch shells?

the person whol sold it to me said that it can only use 2 3/4 inch shells. 3 in shells will work with the barrels, what about the action?

I have a mossberg 500 and both the shot and slug barrel say they can use 2 3/4 and 3 inch shells?
I own a Mossberg 500. Yes, you can use both shells. The pump action works smoothly with both.
Reply:Your particular Mossberg Shotgun is made so you can shoot both 2-3/4 and 3" shotgun shells.* You are good to go.* The 3" length shell is very rarely needed or used however.*
Reply:If the barrel is marked 2 3/4- 3" shells then it is safe to shoot 3" shells with this gun.
Reply:That means the action to. That gun is made for both sizes
Reply:You may just have to pull back extra hard on the slide to stop it from catching in the port. Other than that, it is good to go, it will usually kick harder with 3in than it will with 2 3/4in though so be aware of that.
Reply:All mossberg model 500 shotguns have receivers that will accept 2-3/4" or 3" shotshells. Since both barrels are marked to shoot either length, you can use whichever you prefer.

Some shotguns were made that in earlier versions were chambered only for 2-3/4", but the Mossberg 500 is NOT one of them. They have always been chambered for 3" in 12, 20, and .410 models.
Reply:If the barrels came with the gun, they should work just fine. If they are newer and put on a 2 3/4-inch receiver, they will fire but not eject because they will catch on the front of the ejection port. My advice is to chamber a fired 3-inch shell and see if it will eject.
Reply:If both barrels say they can use either the 2 3/4 and the 3 inch shells you are safe to use both. The 3 inch are much more expensive and have more recoil. Unless I'm duck hunting over decoys I don't ever use the 3 inch. I just don't need the extra reach otherwise.
Reply:if it will load a 3inch shell into the barrels then i would say yes it will shoot both

The outer layer of the shell (periostracum) is wearing off with age. It tends to happen over time, and isn't too much to worry about. I would suggest you vary their diet a bit though, give them moistened dog biscuits and tomatoes occasionally, they also go mad for beetroot!

Where can i buy 12ga beanbag shotgun shells?

I am looking for less leathal home protection. I don't want a stun gun, ninja sword, pepper spray, or a board with a nail in it.

Where can i buy 12ga beanbag shotgun shells?
If you don't have the will or the justification to kill someone dead, you have no business pointing a shotgun at them and it does not matter what ammo you use.

The so-called less lethal ammos are for law enforcement use, although I have some serious ethical problems with any law enforcement using any kind of firearm in a "less-than-lethal" manner.
Reply:I think these are available to law enforcement only.
Reply:If you shoot someone with one, even if they break into your home, you'll be charged with assault at the minimum. The laws on the books in pretty much every state that allows deadly force specifically say that it's an all or nothing deal.

If deadly force is warranted, you have the right to kill the attacker and nothing more. There is *no law* in the US whereby it's legal for you to shoot to wound or use less than lethal force. Either you shoot to kill or you don't shoot.

Even simply saying afterward that you aimed low just to wound him is a crime and will get you tried.
Reply:Beanbags are for longer range less-than-lethal. For distances you're likely to encounter in your home rubber buckshot would provide a lower chance to penetrate. Rubber buckshot's effective range is from 5-20 feet, from there rubber slugs are the best choice for an effective impact without the chance of penetration. Inside five feet you ought to use an OC shell, or flashbang type shell, as the rubber may be lethal at such short ranges. Another method for close ranges is to bounce off of a wall or the ground, which most of the 40mm munitions state clearly in their instructions.

As with any shotgun firing a projectile, it will be considered use of lethal force, so you may actually be better off not leaving anyone to sue you after it's over. Getting hit with lead is far more effective than getting hit with rubber.

Cheaper Than Dirt always has the rubber buckshot, but will sometimes get beanbags, as well frangible breaching slugs.

http://www.cheaperthandirt.com/lessleth_...
Reply:Look at it this way.

In any situation where you are not justified in using lethal force, using less than lethal or non-lethal projectiles WILL NOT protect you from prosecution.

In addition, these less than lethal projectiles can still injure or even kill at close range. If you shoot someone in your home, and they survive, there is a better than good chance that they will sue the pants off you.

You are better off being the only person involved in the gunfight who can still talk to the police.

Doc
Reply:Look up FIRE QUEST.com you can find them there! I have had tons of different 12 guage ammos from them. Rubber bullets, flamethrower rounds, bean bags, tracer rounds, double slugs and a few others. They are leagal to buy and to have them shipped to most states.

Reply:Sorry........But the "REAL" Beanbag Shotgun ammunition is only legal for sale or use by the Military or Law Enforcement Agencies.

There are some "Novelty" after market copies for sale on the Internet ,but don't be fooled, they will not work like the real thing. If a situation you find yourself in warrants a Shotgun to be used, you would be better served to use real buckshot, rather than only go half way and get yourself hurt or worse...
Reply:only avaible to LE....sorry...use rubber buckshot...
Reply:While you may be able to obtain some beanbag rounds or other "less than lethal" shells, it's not a very good idea for private citizens. check out this article for the reason why: http://patc.com/weeklyarticles/beanbags....

For household defense, you ain't going to be shooting more than 10 yards, which is within a lethal range of any type of shotgun ammunition.

And as the name implies, while it MAY be less than lethal, people have died from being shot by such ammunition, so unless your willy to use deadly force in a situation that would warrant you breaking out a shotgun, don't.. Regardless of the outcome, a civil lawyer and possibly the city DA will have a field day with you if you ever used it, not to mention the perp suing you over perceived "pain and suffering" caused by a shotgun wielding "madman" intent on causing maximum suffering and disibilitizing injuries. Don't believe that could/will happen to you? Talk to some lawyers and cops in your area, you may be surprised but what they'd tell you happens when a homeowner tries to do what you've suggested, regardless of your motives.

How to make taco shells?

hi,

how do i make taco shells?

thank you.

How to make taco shells?
Buy corn tortillas. Suspend a wooden dowel between two glasses or some other object of equal heights. Fry the tortillas in oil, remove them from the oil and place them over the wooden dowel to cool. They will take the shape of the dowel rod and you will have taco shells that will keep their shape.
Reply:I worked at a mexican restaurant and we would use corn tortillas (which you should be able to buy I would think making them from scratch is a lot of work) also we used a taco shell maker that was a device that would hold the tortillas in the shape of the taco shell while it's being deep fried. If you don't have a deep frier I don't know what you can do and if you can't find the shell maker make sure any experimenting you do is with stainless steal. I've never seen anything else go in a deep frier. Another trick is to make sure the tortillas ends line up when you fry them.

Why do my salcatta tortoises have pyramiding on their shells?

they're 3 years old and as big as a mans fist.

Why do my salcatta tortoises have pyramiding on their shells?
They are not getting appropriate care or diet. There is something very wrong with their diet and there is some deficiency. Their diet should consist of 80-90% grasses, hays and dark greens, 10-20% vegetables and fruits sparingly. They should also be supplemented with calcium and multivitamin 3 times per week.

I'd suggest consulting a qualified reptile vet. After 3 years, they should be much larger than that, so I'm assuming there could be something wrong that needs fixing.
Reply:they should be way bigger than that now..
Reply:It is a nutritional deficiency. You need to get their diet balanced out and make sure their habitiat is clean and stress free.
Reply:Pyramiding is a form of metabolic bone disease (MBD). It is characterized by a build up or stacking of keratin in the scutes. In advanced cases the shell becomes soft and flattens out.. If you were to tap on the pyramids, they sound hollow. After a summer of grazing on grasses and weeds with plenty of sun and exercise, its shell should become rock hard.
Reply:Pyramiding is a form of metabolic bone disease (MBD). It is characterized by a build up or stacking of keratin in the scutes. In advanced cases the shell becomes soft and flattens out. The above tortoise was rescued from horrible conditions. When I received it the plastron was so soft I could push it in with light pressure. If you were to tap on the pyramids, they sounded hollow. After a summer of grazing on grasses and weeds with plenty of sun and exercise, its shell is now rock hard.

In more advanced stages the shell actually flattens out.

I have discussed this extensively with veterinarians that specialize in reptiles, reptile rehabbers and experienced keepers. It appears that pyramiding in tortoises is from a number of causes. Some are fairly obvious and are mentioned on just about every web site that deals with chelonians:

too much protein

too little calcium

too much phosphorous (a poor calcium :phosphorous ratio)

not enough D3

kidney and/or liver disease (which impair conversion of vitamin D to it's active from), small intestinal disease (disrupts absorption), and disease of the thyroid or parathyroid glands (produce hormones which affect calcium metabolism).

However there are some less obvious, though equally important factors involved

lack of exercise

hydration status

grain based diets

lack of fiber

too much food

being kept too cool

Traditionally the focus has been on protein and calcium. But the protein issue is not as simple as limiting high protein foods. A tortoise can be fed too much protein by feeding large quantities of low protein food. They can also get too much by being fed a normal amount of "good" food if they are confined in a small pen with limited exercise. In the wild tortoises typically walk miles while foraging. The more exercise they get, the more protein is needed. Excess protein in the diet causes the shell to put down heavy layers of keratin. This results in conical scutes giving rise to the appearance of pyramids. It also puts an extra burden on the kidneys and other organs.

Calcium is also an important factor. In the wild the main sources are from the plants, the soil and in the water. Phosphorous plays a limiting role in calcium utilization. High levels of phosphorous leads to calcium being leached from the bones. A recent study showed that teenage girls are now showing signs of early osteoporosis. The relate it to drinking soda which are high in phosphoric acid. For our tortoises the main dietary source of phosphorous is protein. So once again high protein diets tie in. To counter act this and to get the calcium/phosphorous ratio to a healthy 2:1 , its is often recommended to dust all food with calcium (usually calcium carbonate). While superficially it does seem to have benefit, it has its own problems. Too much calcium results in secondary deficiencies of zinc, copper and iodine, malabsorption of essential fatty acids, and formation of calcium-containing bladder stones. Lack of calcium results in soft shells that often accompany pyramiding.

A far better way to provide calcium is to feed plants that are high in bioavailable calcium and leave cuttleboe with them at all times

Vitamin D3 is essential for proper calcium utilization. Tortoises produce their own from exposure to ultraviolet B rays . The ideal source is from exposure to the sun. However many calcium supplements come with D3. Its very easy to over supplement with D3. This can result in calcification of soft tissue. There are a number of bulbs available that provide UVB so D3 supplementation isn't necessary. For more info on the output of these bulbs visit http://russiantortoise.org/uvb.htm

An often overlooked factor is grain based diets. These are the pellet food that some claim to be essential to health. They typically contain soy, wheat and or rice. These are high in omega 6 fatty acids which has a negative effect on health. They also have an acidifying effect which causes a leaching of bone. They are high in phytates which binds calcium and other minerals. They also have an unfavorable ca/ph ratio and a low ca/mg ratio which has a negative impact on calcium metabolism. Grains alter Vit D metabolism. Diets high in grains can have a negative impact on bone growth in spite of adequate exposure to sunshine.

Exercise is very important. It speeds up metabolism. As mentioned before it increases the need for protein. It also causes healthy deposition of calcium in the bones.

Fiber is extremely important for grassland tortoises (as is the type of fiber):

"The cells of the lower bowel receive about 50% of their nutrition from the nutrients in ingesta (and 50% from the blood stream). They specifically need beta-hydroxybutyrate (a short-chain fatty acid that derives from the fermentation of fiber in the lower bowel). One can compare fermentation rates between pellets and the fiber lengths we use, and see a significant difference. The differences means that tortoises on our foods have healthier bowels, which translates into better stools, better abilities to resist and control parasite infestations, better energy metabolism, and better control of nitrogen metabolism (and hence kidney health). Moreover, more water is held in the lower bowel when they're fed the longer length forages, which helps again with water balance and hence kidney function."

Hydration is also important. It includes not just having enough water for drinking but humidity as well. A recent study showed that Sulcata kept at higher humidity levels resulted in less pyramiding than those kept in more arid conditions....in spite of a high protein diet. (diet paper)

Often overlooked is the effect of cool temperatures. Tortoises require a body temperature of 80-90°F to properly digest food. If kept too cool they will still eat and remain active. However they wont be able to properly digest their food and abosrb nutrient, inclding calcium.

PROPER FEEDING:

In the wild, these herbivores species primarily on grasses, shrubs and succulent plants...surprisingly, Leopard tortoises in their natural range prefer Portulacaceae spp. In captivity the ideal situation for these animals to sustain themselves, is to just allow them to graze in a well planted chemically untreated area of your yard. Mine spend most of the year outside in a large pen heavily planted with the Grazing Tortoise Seed Mix For the few months that they are kept indoors, I grow the mix in cat litter boxes.

Opuntia berries

The diet should be at least 70% grasses and hay. Not surprisingly, given its preference for grassland habitats the Sulcata grazes, extensively upon mixed grasses weeds, and flowers. It also favors the fruit and pads of the prickly pear (Opuntia sp.), succulents and thistles. "Meat" foods should never be given to because it can lead to excessive growth, high blood-urea levels, kidney/liver problems, and bladder stones.

In captivity it is a common error to feed too much wet food such as lettuce, tomatoes and fruit when in reality this tortoise requires a coarse, high fiber diet. Feeding excessive fruit or soft foods frequently leads to repeated flagellate (a type of parasite) and other gut problems such as colic, most probably as a result of increased gut motility However, the risks associated with the feeding of fruit can be minimized in very healthy tortoises that are already receiving a varied grassland diet. Adding Hay to the diet to will balance this effect.

Long term ingestion of the chemicals commonly sprayed on produce is a health concern. Choose organic greens when possible or be sure to wash in mild soapy water and rinse well. Remove plastic and metal wrappers so your torts don't accidentally ingest these.

Nutritious chemical free healthy foods are often freely available in your yard or vacant lots.

Grasses, Clovers, Grape, Mulberry %26amp; Fig leaves, Dandelion, Plantain (the weed) , Hibiscus (leaves and flowers), Opuntia, Thistles, Chickweed .This link will help you to be able to identify edible plants:

Better of the easily obtainable grocery greens:

Aim for a high Calcium to Phosphorus ratio and low protein diet. When fed in excess, foods high in Oxalates have been implicated in binding minerals including calcium (marked with asterisk*).

Moderation and variety is the key.

Regularly:

Dark Leafy Greens such as: Endive, *Watercress, Romaine, *Collard Greens, *Kale, Dandelion, Chicory, Escarole, Radicchio, Turnip Greens, Opuntia (smooth or despined)

Occasionally:

Cabbage, Carrots, Carrot Tops, Red Leaf Lettuce, Mustard Greens, Alfalfa Hay, Parsley

**** Rarely****:

Swiss Chard, Spinach, Broccoli, Bok choy, Iceberg lettuce, Sweet Potatoes, Sprouts of any kind, Corn, Cucumbers, Beet Greens, Fruit in general.

Never: Rhubarb, Beans of any kind, dog food, pasta

GETTING THEM TO EAT HEALTHIER FOODS:

Mixing larger portions of things your tort likes in chopped "salads" and slowly cut back on "treat" foods in this mix, is one way to get them adjusted to a better diet. If you tort is healthy and has water available at all times, it wont hurt them to go a couple days w/o food, esp. if it helps them to be hungry enough to appreciate a healthier diet. You might also try putting a bit of squash (or some other foods that they especially like) in the blender and pouring this over the new foods that you're introducing. This is a good chance to sneak extra Calcium in if needed.

How do snails get their shells?

They're born with tissue that is "pre-determined" to become the shell. Then they build them up, using calcium from what they eat

How do snails get their shells?
Hi, Puneter hunter Snail shell is part of its body it gives it the shape and security as it mover around. The snail would be slug if it didn't have an external shell. The shell is the equivalent of our skeleton. A snail is an invertabrate and has traded it spine or back bone for the shell. The shell also provides the animal with security once inside the shell it is safe from predation by birds for example. They feel hurt when their shell is crushed so please don't step on them a beer trap is a kinder way of killing them off. In France they eat snail with a sauce.

Left over ricotta filling left over from stuffed shells?

I made stuffed shells for dinner tonight and have lots of unbaked ricotta filling left over. The mixture has shredded mozzerella cheese in it. Can I freeze the filling? If not, what else can I make with it (besides lasagna)?

Left over ricotta filling left over from stuffed shells?
Yes you can freeze it. You could try lasagne with the filling or make manacotti. I make extra filling and freeze in plastic bags or containers and next time I have a super easy meal.
Reply:you can use the cheese for salads, on top of crackers and sometimes on homemade pizzas
Reply:Buy a pizza shell, and make one with spagetthi sauce and your ricotta filling.
Reply:You can make calzones with the left over filling. Using bread dough you can make small pockets and seal them, baking them at 375 degrees until golden brown. You could also add cooked italian sweet sausage meat. Enjoy!

How to cook taco shells?

I have the guerrro corn tortilla tacos..how do i make them hard and have the shape of a taco?

How to cook taco shells?
Well what I do is heat them a little bit maybe in the microwave to make them ply-able and not break. I fill them with what I want the taco to be and use a toothpick to hold the flaps closed. Then I fry them up in hot oil. That is how I make them I have never tried to make taco shells that are solid like the ones in the stores.
Reply:Here's a taco receipe that is absolutely the bomb.

Determine how many tacos you are going to make.

You'll Need:

Chredded Cheddar Cheese (You can just grate it on the bigger grater holes) a good handful per taco

Shredded Lettuce, (very fine cuts)

Ground Beef or Ground Turkey

Corn Tortillas

Tomatoe (diced)

Salsa

Salt

Pepper

Garlic Powder

Get the tortilla and you want to assemble the meat in a shape of half of the tortilla or a 1/2 moon. You'll press the ground beef or turkey into the tortilla and about 1/8 inch or 1/4 inch thick. (The less meat you use the more you can make.) Fold the tortilla in half, this way you can check to see if the meat is not preventing the fold when you are cooking them. (If you fold all the way when they are raw, it'll break.) Get all of the tacos ready. Arrange in a way where you only see the meat exposed on your counter. Take the salt, pepper and garlic powder and just mildly "dust" the tacos. Here's the trick. You have to pat the seasoning into the meat to "set it in".

Prepare a skillet with olive oil (better) or cooking oil, peanut, vegetable or whatever just deep enough in the pan to not quite cover the taco if the taco was in the pan. Set flame to medium. Take a new tortilla and cut it in half then half again, then each section, half that. Now you have raw tortilla chips. Take one chip and set the edge into the oil. When the oil is at the right temperture, it will bubble and fizz.

Now you have the torilla with 1/2 meat, take it and place it in the pan. Get two forks, with one fork, immediately fold the taco in half as it is cooking. If you wait too long to fold it, it won't fold. You can use the other fork to help fold the tortilla. You can peek at the other side that is cooking. What you are looking for is just a hint of browning color. When you see this flip the taco. Let it cook and mimic the color on first side.

Get a cake pan that has sides on it. Put paper towels on the bottom. Take your folks or tongs and remove the taco from the skillet. Place upside down with one end on the bottom of the pan and wait 3 minutes to drain.

Load the lettuce on one side, you have to open the taco with your fingers. If it snaps or breaks, you waited too long to open it. Load enough to keep the taco open. Place cheese next to almost cover the lettuce. Take the tomato and put on top of the cheese as a garnish of sorts.

Cook your tortilla chips. Rosarita Refried Beans are excellent. I make homemade mexican food all the time

Good Luck and Enjoy!

Jim

Feel free to email me and I'll answer any of your questions.
Reply:Put enough vegetable oil in a deep skillet for deep frying your tortillas.

When oil is very hot place 1 tortilla at a time, with tongs and a large spoon hold and shape tortilla into taco shells (will be like a large potato chip).

Bert
Reply:the soft ones right? usually you need to use a taco tool to fold them over in the oven but u can try to stand them up in a u formation upside down and place gently in the oven and bake until golden 350 degrees and watch closely!
Reply:Well the best thing to do is coat the bottom of a frying pan with veg. oil and heat it up until it gets real hot... then slowly lay a corn tortilla flat into the pan (coating only one side of the tortilla), wait about 5sec and use tongs to fold tortilla in half... brown one side at a time or until it is crunchy enough to your liking ****BUT make sure you keep your tongs between the 2 halves because you are going to need to make sure that they dont end up frying closed shut if that happens then you won't be able to fill the tacos! hope that help.... oh and lay them on napkins to help drain excess oil
Reply:reading the answers

First I never did this

BUT

if they suggest pan fry and then hold in the oven

???

why not drape the tortilla over the grill wires in the oven ,, leave a space or over two wires

Put foil down to help cleanup.
Reply:I pour a generous amount of canola oil in a non-stick pan, get it hot, then place the tortilla in the pan. Cook for about 30-45 seconds, then using a spatula or metal tongs, fold the tortilla in half. Continue to cook for about another 30-45 seconds, then flip on the other side of the newly folded shell. Remove from the oil and set on a paper towel to drain. If you are cooking many shells, keep them warm in the oven, and make sure that you are separating the shells with paper towels so they don't stick.

How often should shotgun shells be replace for a loaded home defensive weapon?

Your ammo should be fine for extended periods of time if it is not damp, overly hot, overly cold. If you want to be as up to date as possible, shoot twice a year and use up the old ammo. You dont have to fire ever shell that is 6 months old, but definitely fire what is in the gun.

Another pointer is what you have swabbed the bore and chamber with. WD 40 is a great product but I wouldn't leave it in a chamber with ammo in there. This is a penetrating oil and will deaden powder or primer. If you have paper shells, you can probably sell them as a curio or to collectors since they have not been in regular use since the 1960's ( late ).

Keep the rest of the box of shells in a cool dry place and just make sure you fire the gun for function and practice twice a year, clean the gun, and just inspect it between shootings.

How often should shotgun shells be replace for a loaded home defensive weapon?
Bound's hubby here:

It kind of depends on the type of shells you are using and the environment. For example, I use plastic hull shells in a cool, dry environment and, in all honesty, I don't change out the shells. I kind of leave them in my pump gun. If I were using paper hull shells, I would probably check them every week. More frequently if the shotgun is kept in a moist environment. Paper hulled shells will swell with moisture and the diameter of the shell will increase causing all sorts of feed jams.

With modern shells I would be less concerned with changing out shells than I would be concerned about fatiguing the magazine tube spring. The last thing you want is for that spring to take a fix while it is compressed.

Good luck.
Reply:I usually rotate my shells every month or so, depending on whether I see any deformation in the front of the crimped part of the shell. Shotgun shells can deform under the pressure of the magazine spring, making them hard to chamber, so rotating them periodically is cheap insurance against a failure to feed malfunction.
Reply:Every time you go out and practice with it, you shoot the old shells and replace them when you are done. You should practice regularly, more often preferred, but at least twice a year.
Reply:just after you use the last one. modern ammo will last longer than you care to imagine.
Reply:I concur with "Griz", take all your weapons out periodically and runs some rounds through them, take them home and clean em.

My shotgun gets a lot of use, I am at the trap range twice a week. My pistol and black rifle I take out about once a month when I get together some buddies.. Pheasant and Quail hunting every fall from Nov1 to Jan31, I'm not a big waterfowl shooter.

My 30.06 I get out about a month before deer or Elk season sight it in..
Reply:I change out once a year. Plastic hulled shotguns shells, stored in a cool dry place will last quite a bit longer, but I just feel better rotate them yearly. Besides, gives me another excuse to go to the range.
Reply:Although properly stored ammunition is not effected by age alone, just to be on the safe side, and for the fun of it, I recycle all my self-defense loads for all my weapons on an annual basis, usually with a special trip to the range with friends on my birthday.
Reply:when the gun goes "click" instead of "bang"

I have heard that you can throw coffee grounds and egg shells into your garden and it helps with the soil.?

is it true that used coffee grounds and crushed egg shells help out your vegetable and fruit gardens? and what does it do exactly?

I have heard that you can throw coffee grounds and egg shells into your garden and it helps with the soil.?
That is called composting, it actually enriches the soil.
Reply:"juncogirl3" and "Steve C" are correct.

Virtually anything organic from the kitchen (meat scraps, fat, grease, and the like being notable exceptions) is acceptable in the garden compost area.

Putting organic material directly into the garden soil is OK - and I do it all the time - but, remember that unless you have abundant numbers of earthworms to break it down, you may change the PH of your garden soil and/or rob it of available nitrogen that would otherwise go toward plant and fruit production. It's best to let the stuff "cook" in a separate pile and then add to the soil after it has had the chance to full break down.

However, if you want to just toss it into the garden and let it cook or breakdown there, I suggest adding some organic nitrogen-rich fertilizer to compensate for the loss of that nutrient in the composting process. (Emphasis on "organic" - chemical fertilizers high in nitrogen, such as ammonium sulfate, will chase away beneficial soil insects and worms).

Hope that's helpful.
Reply:it is a form of composting,it enrich your soil
Reply:Composting is not indiscriminate adding of materials to your soil. You usually have a compost bin or pile that you are aging and which will turn into the compost you will add to your soil. Coffee grounds and eggshells are great to put into a compost pile. Crumbled eggshells are fine to put right in the soil but you have to be careful with coffee grounds. Too much coffee ground material can kill some plants.
Reply:you heard right these add a lot of nutrients into the soil,i would the egg shells dry out a little bit and crush them up into small pieces so as not to stand out so much in the soil.

Does anyone know an easy way to open small clam shells found on the beach, so I can use the shells?

I live on the close to the beach as well. ANd All you have to do is let the clam die , and the shell opens .. Other wise you can boil water then drop the dude's in for about 3-5 minutes . and you have an open shell..

Does anyone know an easy way to open small clam shells found on the beach, so I can use the shells?
You can use a clam knife, but it takes some skill to not chip them. Your best bet is to steam or boil them open. (You'll want to boil them anyway to keep the decaying clam remnants from smelling.)
Reply:use pilers, but of course you will kill the clam.
Reply:And if you need help cleaning them, lay them on a local ant bed for a few days .
Reply:I gather and eats clams regularly. I boil small amount of water and steam them. Only takes 3 to 4 minutes. You have a nice hobby. Make the beach less boring. I get so many that I decorate my aquarium, and places in my yard. I live in hot climate and just looking at shell almost let me feel the cool ocean breeze.

If we aren't allowed to take shells from beaches?

How come you can buy bags of shells from the shops? Where do they come from then?

If we aren't allowed to take shells from beaches?
You are not allowed to take shells off Beeches because they are all mine i tell you mine. I spend a lifetime counting them.
Reply:Some places have quarinetine laws so you cant take shells internationally etc. State Parks %26amp; protected area have those laws in place to try and preserve the environment.

Those shells are probably from some island or coastal place where people are allowed to strip the local resources. There are plenty of people who think money is more important than the environment.

Reply:you can take shells from the beach. its not illegal or anything.
Reply:The person or company that owns a beach is allowed to remove anything that they want and sell it. There are some items that are protected under environmental law, but most things can be removed.

You are not generally allowed to remove items from a public beach. A public beach is owned by the government or an organization (occasionally an individual), the owner generally chooses to restrict removal of these items for they are available for everyone to appreciate. You can usually take a few without anyone saying much, just don't go overboard.
Reply:The only place it is illegal to collect shells are recognized National Parks...other seashores are open for the picking. It is important to know if you are in a protected wildlife habitat. There are several island nations that have no protection in place and ship shells to the US.

Sunflower seed shells are actually toxic to grass, like when dropped from bird feeders, so if you put them in your compost and then use it for fertilizer you may actually kill some of your plants instead of feeding them. You may want to research this further before applying to compost pile.
Reply:If you put sunflowers seeds in your compost bin you are going to end up with sunflowers growing where ever you use your new soil, and it will be a nuisance for you. Any seeds will grow so don't put weeds in either, because you will be pulling their off-spring out next year. I even had tomatoes and cantaloupes grow amongst my flowers, and that's not really where you want them growing. Dump the seeds beside the bin and the birds or small animals will eat them.
Reply:I wish I could give you an authoritative source (actually, my source is my father, who managed several greenhouses and was highly successful growing just about anything) but to the best of my knowledge, sunflower seed shells are toxic to grass, which is why the grass under a bird feeder that held sunflower seeds will often die. So it seems best to throw away the sunflower seed shells. Fortunately, there are many other items you can compost safely to help your garden flourish!
Reply:The shells...yes. If you put the whole things in, including the seed, then the seeds will probably grow.
Reply:Yes. Anything that is plant material can be added to compost. Only things you should leave out are meat and dairy products, and they say not too many onion peels, for some reason. Don't know what qualifies as "too many". If anything you add does start to sprout, just cut off the foliage, and add them as well.
Reply:if the seeds are cooked they wont grow. any thing bio degradable is good for compost
Reply:yes
Reply:anything that comes out of the ground can go back in it. Any seed, however, will probably sprout. Not a big problem tho.

Does "Net Weight" on packaging of in -shell pistachios include the weight of the shells as well?

Thanks!

Does "Net Weight" on packaging of in -shell pistachios include the weight of the shells as well?
Yes, it does include the shells.
Reply:yes ... unless you think someone took the nut out of the shell, weighed them, and then put the shell back on......
Reply:of course it does.

How do I get pine nuts out of their shells?

they usually come out of their shells. but if not, throw 'em in a 350 degree oven until they start to turn a little brown and take them out and rub them in a dish towel.

Hit it wit an hammer
Reply:The easiest way is to purchase them already shelled! They're known by the name Pignolia Nuts and are pretty expensive, mostly because they're a real pain to shell! We used to collect them when I was a kid and we would crack their tiny shells with our teeth to get them open. Have fun!
Reply:I carefully use a nutcracker.

What happens when you eat sunflower seeds shells and all?

isn't it just fiber?

What happens when you eat sunflower seeds shells and all?
Nothing dangerous! I used to eat them this way as a kid when I had no place to spit the shells. I remember we did this while sitting in class so the teacher didn't know we were eating during school time.
Reply:Sunflower seed shells are pure dietary fiber, and will just pass right through you. But you had better chew them well, because from my experience, it's quite a prickly predicament. Report It
Reply:nothing. it might digest if it is chewed. Not so sure of it was whole. you will be fine if you did eat it. I have been eating for for 2 days straight and sometimes i just eat a whole one. My tongue hurts and my lips are dry. LOL but nothing with happen i eat them all the time and i never have gotten sick or hurt in any way. IT is just a shell. so it will digest just fine. if it is chewed up
Reply:If you swallow a little dirt with them maybe you'll grow one in your stomach! JUST KIDDING! Actually nothing. They'll pass right on through. You can buy them with the shell off, you might like those better. I know I do.

Reply:Shake the egg to break the yolk, make a hole in the top and the bottem only small, blow into one off the holes and the middle will come out of the other end, then you are just left with the empty shell, and then you can paint on it for easter, I used to that when I was little
Reply:you can crush them and they will keep snails off your plants or you can compost them
Reply:If you or someone you know has planters outside, put them on top of the soil. The snails won't crawl on them because of the sharp edges.

My dog cracks open sunflower seed shells and eats the seed?

If i give my dog sunflower seeds she cracks it open and eats the seed! As well as with pistashios. With the sunflower seed she doesnt eat the shell at all just the seed! Does anyone else's dog so this and does anyone else think thats pretty dang smart!?

My dog cracks open sunflower seed shells and eats the seed?
Our two dogs (I don't know if one taught the other or not) ate peanuts the same way. The would crack the shell, roll them on the carpet to get the brown skin off, then they would eat the nut. --- Smart dogs.
Reply:I used to have a dog that ate grapes (only the green ones) and he only liked the seedless type.
Reply:Good doggy! Try other raw food items such as pieces of raw potato or carrot (organic), also apple cores are great treats (again organic). Pretty doggone smart if you ask me!

Thanks for the Q :)
Reply:I have two dogs and they both will open up 2-liter's and 20 ounce bottles. If there's a bottle of soda set on the floor they'll take it and open it and get there tounge inside and drink what's left.
Reply:urs is really smart, one time i cracked 1 open 4 my dog n he liked them but i dont know how a dog can crack it by himself.
Reply:No, but my dog does that to pumpkin seeds.. She doesn't really like sunflower seeds.
Reply:I have birds, the dogs treat their trays as buffets. They eat seeds constantly! Honestly haven't paid any attention to see if they are cracking them first...haha.

I think your dog is a gourmet eater! Smart doggie.

Reply:We can take them from most of our beaches here in Washington, but it is a nice question to ponder. :-)
Reply:some countries do not have that regulation
Reply:ay ,ay, ay!
Reply:i believe its against the law to even take sand too-good question though have a star
Reply:The best shells come from below the intertidal zone, and away from sandy beaches where they are ground down by the surf.

I haven't heard of any rules or laws about collecting shells on a beach - as I said, they're only going to be ground into nothing in a matter of months. If there are such laws, that's insane!
Reply:we can't take shells from the beaches? doh!!
Reply:To the people that don't know....Yes, it is illegal in some places to take shells from state park beaches. I'm in California and that's how it works here.

Non-state park beaches you can take shells from.

I'm not sure where the shells come from, I would guess from foreign countries.
Reply:Golly, I always take home a shell from a day out at the beach. Have I been committing a crime all these years?!
Reply:Who is stopping you taking shells from beaches?

Your mum?
Reply:no wonder there is a shortage of sea shells on the sea shore.

Reply:Oh boy.... um i guess i have been commiting crime these 8 years... You can if ya want. No one is stopping u. Ps. Who said you coulnt take shells from the beaches?

Why do some sea shells turn purple?

I live on the British Columbia coast, on Vancouver Island. On the seashore, we have many sea shells (say that 10 times fast). My question is, why is it that some sea shells turn purple on the inside? Does it have something to do with red tide?

Why do some sea shells turn purple?
I would think it would have to do with the minerals that were used in the making of the shell itself. Red tide is caused by a type of algae, so, unless this "purple" you are talking about can be scraped off, it doesn't necessarily have anything to do with it, and even if it can, it probably isn't the same species of algae. Hope this helps!
Reply:if you're talking about the shiny, iridescent purple coating that forms, Its called mother-of-pearl. The sea organism secretes that coating to smooth and strengthen its shell. It has almost no monetary value though, sorry =P

What is a good organic objects would be good to use in Plaster of Paris besides sea shells?

If you're just using them to make textured surfaces, then I have seen interesting lace effects, and also large cabbage leaves (the kind that have a thick spine and veins). I know lace isn't organic, just thinking out loud. Pine cones. Ammonites. Cat's paw. If you're leaving them there, then the previous is good.

Can the big end shells be removed on a 2068cc Renault espace diesel?

my espace big ends are knocking a little, oil pressure is good I want to know if the bigend shells can be replaced in situ' without taking the engine out.

Can the big end shells be removed on a 2068cc Renault espace diesel?
Unlikely unless you can remove the sump in situ.
Reply:It will be very difficult to do unless you can first remove the whole of the front suspension. If it turns out that the crank needs to be dressed or re-ground you will need to remove the engine any way as you will not be able to strip the crank from the fly wheel.

My advice would be to drop the engine and gear box out from under the car and strip it down properly.

Ja.
Reply:yes they can but you have to loosen the engine mountings and jack the engine up a few inches to remove the sump pan the oil pick up strainer gets in the way otherwise
Reply:Have to change mains as well as these control oil pressure loss big ends use centrifugal force to generate oil pressure also replace pump as most likely cause of end failure

Can nickel pistol shells be used as earrings without irritating my skin?

Are they really nickel? I was thinking about using some of my hydra-shock casings as plugs after I trim them down and clean them

Can nickel pistol shells be used as earrings without irritating my skin?
ok ted nugent hahah
Reply:Might I suggest going with these.

http://www.mapartsinc.com/products.asp?c...
Reply:The clean casings shouldn't cause you any harm because you will be hanging them from stainless wires. If the wires do not harm your skin, you can wear the casings as earrings if you wish.

What kind of plugs are you talking about? You cannot use casings for ear plugs to protect you from noise. They will privide no noise protection at all. Use proper hearing protection. Noise induced hearing loss is perminant and your hearing is screwed!!

If you happen to be one of those poor souls who have chosen to put the gigantic holes in their ears and stuff strange things into them, I would not stuff cartridges in your holes. You could have a reaction to the metal which could cause real problems. Maybe one of the shops which cater to big ear hole people will have a cartridge replica made of something that would be non-allergenic.
Reply:Yes, they are really nickel shells. If you are allergic to nickel, then don't put them on as earrings.
Reply:many people have adverse reactions to nickle, try them for a few days but think of a back up plan just in case!!
Reply:you can get a jeweller to over-plate them with another metal.
Reply:Nickel is the metal in cheap earrings that irritates most peoples ears badly. I'd suggest talking to body piercer before you do and show them what you are planning on doing with them. They may be a bit large to use as spacers to begin with if you haven't already started spacing.
Reply:how many real hunters know about earrings? try the fashion blog.

Check out this site for great hermie info:

Reply:NO! Painted shells are bad for hermit crabs in the first place!
Reply:don't know why but this question makes me laugh. all crabs outgrow their shells and need new ones, I think.

might not be good for the crab.

maybe use like natural stains? blueberries, strawberries, that kind of thing?
Reply:You should be able to paint the crab's shell right now. It is not a part of the living organism but something they pick up for shelter. I don't think it would hurt them, just don't get the paint inside the shell. Make sure it is a quick drying paint.

Is selmonila on the outside of egg shells?

Wouldn't that make it unsafe for kids to use them in craft projects? What if I have a plastic egg carton, wash it out with hot water and soap, then use it for a candy mold? is that safe? thanks!

Is selmonila on the outside of egg shells?
How Does Salmonella Infect Eggs?

Bacteria can be on the outside of a shell egg. That's because the egg exits the hen's body through the same passageway as feces is excreted. That's why eggs are washed and sanitized at the processing plant. Bacteria can be inside an uncracked, whole egg. Contamination of eggs may be due to bacteria within the hen's ovary or oviduct before the shell forms around the yolk and white. SE doesn't make the hen sick. It is also possible for eggs to become infected by Salmonella Enteritidis fecal contamination through the pores of the shells after they're laid.

eggs purchased in todays markets Are so safe salmonela is almost unkown..

Buy only USDA graded My opinion.
Reply:The salmonella is in the whites, that's the protein. If you wanted to use the egg cartons, you'll be fine as long as no eggs cracked in the carton. Have the kids wash after crafting and not touch their faces. Good luck!
