Can i put shells in my fresh water tank?
I would only recommend using shells that have been purchased from a pet shop and that are marked aquarium safe. If you are using shells that you have personally collected, then you need to boil the shells gently for several minutes to kill any organic matter that could harm your fish.

You also need to keep in mind that real shells will raise the pH. You need to be cautious about adding too many shells into such a tiny tank as your pH could become too high. This could be especially true if you use tap water to fill your tank. Tap water is generally very alkaline (7.8 - 8.5) and combined with shells could keep your water too alkaline for fish small enough for your tank. Neon tetras, guppies and bettas prefer neutral to slightly acidic water. The shells may not be a good idea.....
Reply:i had a 20 gallon tank at my parents, and yeah, i put real sea shells. just rinse them in running water VERY WELL.

there are also shells you can buy at your local pet stores that are made for putting in tanks, but you should wash those really well anyway, since fish are so sensitive.

just dont put in shells that are artificially painted for decorative purposes, because they may look prettier, but that paint peeling off your tank cant be good, you know?
Reply:Sure, just make sure they're clean. Scrub them well to remove any pollutants, soak them in a mild bleach solution to kill off any germs %26amp; parasites, then let them air dry in the sun (if they're pocketed then let them dry for several days to make sure there's no remaining bleach water inside the pockets).
Reply:yh u can if u want to but let me warn u be careful where u take dem from if u get them from a fish shop dats fine but if u get it from a beach i wouldn't if i were u becasue they will be salty. unless u thorouhly wash it den dnt add sheels from da beach.

if u really want to den wherever u get dem from dnt foget to clean them thoroughy or it can kill ur fish
Reply:Yes of course.. just make sure they are washed.. sterilized etc.. so if they are off the beach you are not putting any unwanted pollutants in your tank.. etc
Reply:Yes just wash them and make them clean cause the ocean is a dirty place and you don't want fish dying fo we now!
Reply:boil them in hot water (steralize)them they will be fine to put in
Reply:I would use river rocks u can buy them from any store
