How do sea shells form? What gives them their pattern?

How do sea shells form? What gives them their pattern? Why are some patterns horizontal (lengthwise) while others are ridges going vertically?

Sea shells are built of calcium carbonate excreted by mollusks in the form of 'nacre'.

The different patterns are determined by the genes of each mollusks species. Most spiral shells follow the fractal formula z=(z^2)+1
Reply:Sea shells are actually the outer coverings of aquatic molluscs, like hermit crabs. There is no way of knowing what gives them their patterns. Different types of seashells have different patterns, and they are all part of nature.
Reply:How do your bones form. Why do some look like a skull and others look like ankle bones and others look like leg bones.
