Why do my egg shells crack?

Everytime I try to hard-boil eggs half of them come out with cracked shells. When I put them in the pot the shells look fine, no cracks. After I boil them half crack and have boiled egg coming out the seems.

Why?

Why do my egg shells crack?
My foolproof HB egg recipe, you need to put the eggs in the water before putting the pan on the stove. Then don't jack the temp up to the highest it will go, between med hi to hi. Boil for 5-7 minutes then turn off the stove and let them sit in the hot water for another 10 or so minutes. Then take the pot to the sink and slowly run cold water into the pot until the water temperature drops to the same as the faucet. Fill the pot with ice and cold water for about 5 minutes and nothing will be cracked and your shells will come right off.
Reply:put your eggs in a medium sized pot

pour in cold water just covering eggs

add a teaspoon of white vinegar

add a teaspoon of salt

gradually bring the eggs up to boil

lower fire and simmer 10 minutes

turn off fire, cover, and let sit for half an hour.

OR if you are in a hurry rinse them in cold water

to peel them

crack both ends first then slowly

crack the shell from top to bottom and hold the egg under water gently break the membrane with your thumb and remove the shell.
Reply:You're boiling them too long. I made the same mistake for a long time thinking that they wouldn't be done if I didn't boil them for 15+ minutes. Buy an egg timer...you'll get the perfect boiled egg with no cracks!
Reply:You may need to boil them on medium high or just medium heat... Another reason may also be when you put them in the pot... they may hit against the hard surface or hit each other... Lastly... most eggs will crack because of the pressure of the yolk and whites hardening... sometimes the white and yolk have a greater mass and cannot be contained in the small egg shell!

hope that helps!
Reply:if you poke a small whole up the end with a pin, it won;t crack. But a little egg will come out the top. It will also peel with out the shell sticking to it
Reply:try simmering, not boiling.
Reply:if you let the water boil and then put the egg in it will crack because of the temperature difference

so put them in at the start and let the water boil with the eggs allready in the pan :)
Reply:Try putting them in the water first and heating them gradually. Just time them from when the water starts to boil. Or put them out on the counter for 30-40 minutes before you want to cook them so they're not cold from the fridge.

Hope that helps....
Reply:Either a pinch of salt or a splash or vinegar to your luke-warm water will help. Also, don't overcrowd your pot with eggs while boiling. If your pot is too crowded, the eggs will bounce off each other while boiling, this will cause them to crack. Also, don't turn your heat up too high, about medium-high heat is perfect for boiling eggs.
Reply:Honey, follow Sharon's advice. That's the way I have done it for years and it's pretty much fool proof.
Reply:Put salt in the water. It will keep the egg from running out even if they do crack. Why? Hell if I know. My grandmother taught me this and you dont ask grandma why.
Reply:its because as the egg hardens it gets bigger and since egg shells are so thin it breaks
Reply:Put them in the water at the time you want to boil them , then after the water starts to boil turn off burner and let stand till cooled down.
