How do you know how many shells a element has?

If you look on the periodic table how can you tell how many shells the elements have?

How do you know how many shells a element has?
When you find the number on the periodic table, check which row it is in, That is the number of shells. Don't forget thet H is row 1, etc
Reply:the outermost shell is always the # of elements in that elements row.

so if you're looking at oxygen at 8, its code is 2s2,2p4. So it has 6 outer shells
Reply:look on the periodic table under the symbol for the electron configuration.

ex: 2-8-8-1 has 4 shells

ex: 2-8-8-8-1 had 5 shells

hope that helps :)
