What can someone do with a bunch of cicada shells?

Is it good to use as a fertilizer?

If the cicadas died naturally, they could be added to compost. If they were sprayed with insecticide though, you wouldn't want to use them.

You would want to make sure that all the guts and goo inside the cicada were removed before putting them in the compost. The chitin of their exoskeleton will break down fairly nicely, but the fat, meat and organs of the critters will rot and make your compost unpleasant smelling, and may attract unwanted scavengers (the same reason you don't put meat in your compost bin).

Or, you could try making a necklace out of them I suppose. It would probably fall apart fairly easily, and probably not suitable for a black-tie affair, but it could be done.
