My turtle likes to dig...what is the best for his aquarium, rocks, shells, sand?

He is a slider who has grown from the size of a half dollar to the size of a teacup saucer.

You should use large river rocks as a substrate. DO NOT use gravel, they eat this and become impacted and could die.

You could use aquarium sand, but unless you have a really strong filter I don't recommend it because it will clog and stress the motor and will shorten the life of the filter.
Reply:Does it have water to swim in? If not, maybe it is digging to try and find water! I know that seems dumb, but alot of people on here don't even know that sliders need to be able to swim. If it likes to dig, maybe it is a female and is egg-bound. If this is the case, you may need to provide it with an area to dig and lay its eggs. If not, it may just be looking for something to do. Mine like to dig too. Just keep light rocks at the bottom. Just make sure the rocks are too big for them to swallow. If they swallow a rock, they can become impacted and die!
Reply:i think something like gravel and large bits of sand, and medium rocks, so that there is a variety, and that the turtle doesnt eat the rocks by accident or anything.
Reply:sand then slope it down to some water. like at the beach. get wat i mean?
Reply:put in the sand thats made for aquariums from the pet store, that way its non toxic incase the animal eats it
Reply:Rock, shells and sand are good. just dont use gravel because turtle eat them and get intestinal problems and may die.
Reply:rocks
