Why do oysters need used shells to repopulate an area?

This weekend about 10 boatloads of oyster shells were put into the waters around Point San Quentin (Marin County, CA).

How do oyster shells help repopulate the area? Is there a nutrient or mineral in those shells that will help other oysters?

Mainly curiosity.

Why do oysters need used shells to repopulate an area?
It's so they have something to anchor to.
Reply:Ref question about moon landing!!!

ABC or any other TV network will only have 2nd hand tape. You cant inspect a 2nd hand recording to see if its authentic or not can you!!!!

Think about it!

Oh and explain the flag that flutters in the WIND on the moon? wind on the moon?????

And who took the photo of armstrong setting foot on the moon the first time?

the photographer would be the 1st man on the moon. Right?
