Is it safe to eat sunflower shells?
As long as you chew them up thoroughly (no sharp bits), I'd say yes. Extra fiber, and we all need extra fiber. However, eating them shell and all as opposed to cracking them and eating just the kernel significantly increases the amount of salt you're taking in. If you have high blood pressure, that can be a bad thing.
Reply:You know, if you were just looking for an answer that fit you needs you didn't have to ask if it was ok. It really IS NOT ok to eat the outsides, the seeds will get stuck in your lining, and you will have to have surgery to get rid of them. Report It

Reply:No, they get stuck on your insides. My cousin used to do this and had to go to the hospital to get her...ahem..rear cleaned out. I don't think you want to go through that embarressment. If you like the crunchiness of the shell try pumpkin seeds you can eat thouse whole!!
Reply:My husband never takes the shells off when he eats sunflower seeds. He has never had a problem. If you chew them up throughly so there are no jagged pieces then you shouldn't have any problems when you go to the bathroom.

Reply:they cant be digested properly, so no. when you "pass" them, the shell can cut your anus. just buy the unshelled ones, or be patient and shell them as you eat them.
Reply:Believe it or not, its very harmful to eat the shells of sunflowers. My husband was rushed to the hospital last month after eating an ENTIRE bag of sunflower seeds. This painful process lasted for over three days and without going into the gruesome details, its safe to say that after years of eating these addicting seeds, he will never eat them again. This is a great questions because prior to this experience, we never dreamed that something like this could ever happen.
