How do you get the fish smell out of sea shells?

Lick them clean.

How do you get the fish smell out of sea shells?
Hi

I assume you have oyster, muscle or clam shells

left after a meal.

And want to put them in your collection.

The outer shell was probably already cleaned somewhat by the fisherman %26amp; seafood company then again at your house.

The steaming cleans them further,

but still never perfect.

Be sure to remove any meat still attached to the shell.

Your fingernails, wooden or plastic instrument should work. Avoid knives, metal tools, steel wool that might scratch or chip shell or injure you.

Soak in warm water plus liquid dishwashing detergent.

Might want to avoid Comet because it is abrasive and might remove/deface desirable shell features.

Scrub the inner and outter shell with a toothbrush.

(just don't use your little brother's!)

Rinse well in water.

If they still smell or have a gunk residue on them.

Submerge them in a plastic container with bleach solution (1 part bleach: 9 parts water) otta work.

If you are a kid, please have an adult assist you with this because bleach is a dangerous chemical.

Wear eye protection and old clothes.

Wear glooves or use tongs or chopsticks to handle shells

Keep the container in a safe place.

Let them soak for 1-24 hours.

The longer time will make them cleaner but you might lose or fade some of the natural colors.

Rinse well by soaking in water until no longer smell bleach.

Set on paper towels to dry.

Place in the sun to further dry and to "photobleach" them.

If you decide to collect fresh starfish,

tho now illegal in some states.

I let the ants eat them clean.

Good Luck!
Reply:Vinegar and a rinse with water. Lemon juice works too. Any weak acid will get the smell out.
