How do we call the artificial making of corals or shells?
Coral is the shell of a living animal, usually one that lives in colonies. Corals only live within 30 metres of the tropical ocean surface and between c21-30 C. Coral shell is only produced while the animal is alive, once it dies in the sea the coral shell starts to deteriorate, thus you couldn't cut it in half and use it twice. The colour of dead coral , resulting from the biological processes of the living animal, is only preserved out of the ocean, e.g. as used in jewelry.

I suspect you may thinking about cultured pearls. Pearls are formed in oysters when a piece of sand or grit gets into its shell. Cultured pearls are produced by introducing a piece of artificial material into the oyster, a round plastic bead would form an ideal base for a round pearl to be produced. The material of pearls and those shiny pearlescent sea shells is called nacre and the adjective is 'nacreous', i.e. composed of or looking like, nacre. It is actually the same material as sea-shell, i.e. calcium carbonate but its appearance is due to biological modification; the oyster coats sharp grit with smooth nacre to reduce the irritation. I could imagine that with care a pearl might be used several times during its lifetime.
Reply:If you are talking about a living piece of coral. Than Yes. It is possible and really quite easy to cut it into pieces for purposes of propagation. In fact IMHO this is the best way since taking wild specimens is becoming more and more frowned upon. However you will need an aquarium and lots of expensive equipment to supply the right water and light conditions.Check the web There are many good sites that will tell you in great detail how it is done.
