Can you blend crushed oyster shells from the feed store with sand for a bocce ball court surface?

Has anyone blended feed store crushed oyster shells with another media such as sand, 1/4" gravel or something else for a good bocce ball court surface? If so what % of oyster shells to the other media? Thanks for your help!

Any kind of surface can be used as both players/teams will be playing with the same conditions. If you are going to make a bocce ball court, you want a surface that is not too soft as the balls will make holes if tossed, and will slow down greatly if they have to plow thru. First you want to make sure you got good water drainage underneath. start with gravel about 1 inch size. Spread that around so it is 2-3 inches deep. On top of that, put your surface.

"A hard-packed surface can be accomplished with a mixture of clay and oyster shell with a topping of oyster shell flour; limestone; brick dust; decomposed granite or other suitable material." (Notice the reference does NOT mention sand.)

I personally would not use oyster shell as no matter how clean they get it, there is still some risidual organic material and there is a problem with smell. (I have a sensitive nose.)

If you are going to make your own court, you must love the game. Do not build a court on the cheap as it will only detract from the game.
