What do the thee empty bullet shells represent in a folded flag?

The shell casing are supposed to be from the 21 gun salute given during a military Honors funeral. The Flag and the casing are given to the next of kin to show our country's thanks for the persons service.

the shell casings represent

Duty

Honor

Country
Reply:Upthcrek has it correct. The shell casings come from the honors given to those who have fallen.
Reply:Actually the bullet shells are kept to represent each war or battle the soldier fought in. I.E. My grandfather got 3, one for WW2, one for Vietnam, and one for Korea.
