How do you put holes into sea shells without damaging the shell?
I've just used a very small drill bit in a regular portable drill. I've drilled lots of shells, especially sand dollars, and it's worked great. If you're drilling on a curved surface make sure it's supported.
Reply:an samll diamond head drill helps
Reply:A dremil is good for this - you can get very small bits to drill with and also some bits to polish up the shells. You can get them at walmart - about $40.
Reply:Most answers have told you that it is not a real problem. It does help if you put the shell in a pan of water that is just above the shell. This keeps any heat from building up and keeps the shell dust out of your eyes and nose. A spir bit is the best to use. Sheet metal bit as it is called some times. If you have only a very few then you can use a small hand type drill. You can cut shells with a fine tooth band saw or coping saw but again it works best if you can have water flowing over the shell. Have fun and enjoy yourt shells.
Reply:Either a manual hand drill or electric drill with small diameter drill bit for your prefer size, check it out at any hardware shop or DIY
