How can i extract chitin from crab shells?
This one is just too easy! All sea animal shells are composed almost entirely of chitin %26amp; CaCO3. Place the cleaned shells in a 1% solution of HCl @ 150 deg. F , when the bubbles stop the plastic like pieces left are chitin.
Reply:The HCl solution is a reagent that is in far excess of what you need to convert CaCO3%26gt;CaCl2. The soak time is when the CO2 bubbles stop coming out of solution. Try drying %26amp; weighing the shells before %26amp; after.% yield=int./finial X 100 Report It
Reply:Try boiling with CaCl2.
