Chestnuts - how do I cook them quickly - can I microwave them in their shells - how long for?

Mmmmm Love Chestnuts.. I have never tried cooking them in a microwave. Maybe you could try just one in there and see. Otherwise, I split them put in the oven at 400* and bake for 20-25 minutes. Take out, wrap in a clean kitchen towel to keep warm while you eat. Enjoy...

NOOOOOOOOOOO

they'll explode
Reply:You absolutely CAN microwave chestnuts. I always cook them this way and never had one explode. Just use a sharp knife and cut a tiny piece off the "pointed" end or cut a little slit in the centre of each shell. That will allow steam to escape so they don't explode. They cook VERY quickly, under a minute for about ten chestnuts placed in a circle on a plate. Quick and easy! Enjoy :-)
Reply:no don't microwave them you will exploded or burst them open and you might ruin your microwave . just roast them in a 300 conventional oven umm their so good
Reply:Get each chestnut put a small cut in them lay them out on a grill pan put them under the grill when they start to go a bit black turn them over. My mams done this for years it works really fast.
Reply:I use this recipe all the time. It's fast and tasty. Hope this helps. Cheers,

Microware 'Roasted' Chestnuts

----------------------------------------...

1 lb. Chestnuts

Cut large X into flat side of Chestnut using knife

Arrange the cut Chestnuts in microwave pan

Microwave on high (100%) for 2.5 minutes

While Chestnuts are still warm - peel
Reply:Don't microwave them, they will explode. You need to make a small cut in the shell of each chestnut, then either put in the oven for 10 minutes or so or under the grill (on quite a low setting) for about 20 minutes.
Reply:do not microwave..they will explode..do them slowly in the oven.
Reply:Yes you can microwave them, but they have a nicer flavour if you roast them in the oven. slit them all halfway using a sharp knife (to allow air to escape) except for one. When the one that was not slit pops or explodes then you know that they are cooked. Chesnuts are also very delicious if roasted on an open fire.
Reply:Depends what you want to use them for. I only use chestnuts for chestnut stuffing my turkey at Christmas. When I was younger I used to sit for hours with a huge saucepan full of simmering water and chestnuts and then peel them once the coat was soft. It took hours but wow what stuffing!

Now I buy chestnuts in vacuum packaging ready to use or in tins in juice from France. Either way with the rest of the stuffing recipe they are just as good.

Stuffing:

This can be stuffed into a turkey or wrapped in tinfoil [wiped over with olive oil] before cooking in the oven, or baked in bread tins and sliced.

1/2 lb thick boiled ham cut into small squares

Breadcrumbs from 2 stale tin loaves

6 eggs beaten

4 tins of chestnuts [50 chestnuts if you peel them yourself]

or 6 vacuum packs of chestnuts

Ground pepper to season

Sea salt to season

Put the ingredients into a big bowl and mix altogether with your hands - you can wear those very thin rubber gloves if you don't like the idea of shoving your hands in all that lot!

Stuffing the turkey is the best way because they complement each other with flavour.

Enjoy.
