does anyone else have any irrational fears, or am i all alone?
I am frightened of hard boiled eggs ( especially ones with brown speckled shells )?
I am scared of balloons.
Reply:This is a new phobia I haven't heard of anyone being afraid of eggs before, hard boiled or otherwise. You may need to see an eggspert.

i hate feet....

and i hateeeeeee my friend hailey...
Reply:Baked Beans!!! Even the smell of them makes me feel sick!!!
Reply:But will you eat eggs that are cooked otherwise??
You don't eat the shell.
Reply:many people have irrational fears
Reply:Irrational fears are like allergies -- sometimes you can't help "sneezing"
I have mine too.... ain't gonna say what they are... but I got em.
Thinking that perhaps in some cases of irrational fears it is something in the coloration or spatial relationship to the surroundings that might trigger the fear response.
It's been said that sometimes phobias are also brought on by too much caffien or even -- IMHO -- maybe... food allergies.
In any case I say to myself -- let them fears come -- let em give me butterflies in my stomach -- however -- I'm gonna make those butterflies Fly in Formation!! Then there are other times when I just want to close my eyes and get the heck outta there!!! LOL
Take care
Peace
Reply:wow i am so glad I'm not the only one with a freaky fear.... I absolutely hate and fear beyond the worst hate and fear you could possibly feel..... BANANA′S. i can not walk into fruit store without wanting to throw up... i can look at them without remembering what they feel like how they smell.... I wont go to lunch at peoples houses until I'm sure there is no bananas involved...... once my younger brother made a fruit salad at school and brought it home and with everything he makes we have to close our eye′s and taste it...before it even reached my mouth the putrid smell of the banana reached my nose and i was off in a state of panic...sweating...shaking and then vomiting...so no your not so weird and if there is anyone that can help us out there please give us a shout.
Reply:Don't know why but I terrified of spiders, no matter how small they are, it's really embarrassing!
Reply:I really am frightened of Spinach. I cannot stand the sight of a softly boiled egg running over the top of it.
I really do have nightmares over it.
My advice, stay away from hard boiled eggs, they are not vital.

And spiders--too many legs! And the way they move!
So sad that you're afraid of brown eggs! Do they have to be hardboiled, or any brown egg? Maybe you choked on one, or became very sick from eating one when you were too small to remember it.

I can avoid most of the above, but the stainless steel can be problematic.

We have fresh chicken eggs for health reasons. The question...how can you peel w/o hassle of sticky shells. ???
The shells are nearly impossible to remove. Yet we can't figure out how to remove them w/o the subsequent hassle of time-consuming egg-shell stickinesses...
Anyone knows of any tried-and-true solutions??? Info would be really appreciated!!! Thanks

Tried and True: Older eggs that are hard-cooked peel better than newly-laid eggs. Gather a dozen or so, and put in your fridge for 3-4 weeks. THEN hard-boil them and they should peel easily.
Reply:Old or new - plunge them into ice cold water right away and you should be able to peel the shells off no problem.

Reply:I don't understand the question
Reply:Try an eggstractor... seen here...http://www.eggstractor.net I have one and love it. It really does work how they say it does.. no shells, no mess. It's great.
They are also a lot easier to peel if they are cold, not warm.
Reply:First, start with COLD water that covers eggs. Add at least 1 tablespoon of salt. Boil about 15 minutes. Drain hot water, add cold water and a few ice cubes. Let the boiled eggs sit in cold water bath about 15 minutes; then crack one with another, all over. Peel, getting membrane with the shell. You may have a few that give you a hard time, but for the most part the shells come off like taking from a stick of butter.
I've never heard of using vinegar, but I'm willing to give it a try sometime.
Good luck.

Reply:I would recomend you bring eggs to boil. turn them off for 30 minutes. dunk in cold water and ice for 10 minutes. they should peel nicely.
Reply:How To Peel Hard-Cooked Eggs Easily:
This is what I do:
I place the eggs in the pan they were cooked in and add cold water.
I then crack the eggs under water (this seems to help loosen the membrane under the shell).
Start peeling at the larger end, where the air pocket is, and remove the shell under running water to make the shelling easier. You must get a hold of the membrane under the shell when you remove the shell. Very fresh eggs are harder to peel. The fresher the eggs, the more the shell membranes cling tenaciously to the shells.
Reply:If you are talking about hard boil eggs, you need to take them out of the hot cooking water and plunge them immediately into cold water - from the tap, or if that isn't cold enough in a pan of cold water with ice cubes. That stops the cooking of the shell and allows it to break away from the egg inside.
Reply:I normally just crack them on the side of the bowl. I've never had fresh eggs that had "egg shell stickinesses". Did you forget to tell us something?
Reply:As soon as your done boiling them - instead of cracking them - roll them and peel them under cold running water. Works every time (for me). Good luck. And good for you - free range chickens are the best eggs.
Reply:The Joy of Cooking cook book has the definitve "recipe" for this - usually boiled eggs are harder to peel when over cooked - the yolk should not be any color other than yellow (no green, etc)...
Use vinegar in the water and start with almost room temp eggs and cold water in the stock pot....the book has time according to hard cooked, soft cooked, etc....I also purge eggs into a bowl of ice water to stop the cooking and to lower the overall temp then roll the eggs and peel under cool running water....
Hope it helps...
Reply:Chill before taking the shell off.
Reply:Firstly, it's MOST important that after the hard-boiled eggs have finished boiling, that they be immediately rinsed in and then left to soak in very, VERY cold water -- the colder the better, icy is best. This insures that the shell will separate from the albumen (the thin film that separates the shell from the egg) allowing us to peel the egg.
THEN, I find that the best way to peel a hard-boiled egg is to tap both ends on a hard surface, breaking the shell on both ends and then laying the egg on its side on the hard surface, simply and quickly rolling it gently but firmly against the hard surface which causes many, many tiny and larger cracks to form through the shell and then it's ready for easy peeling.
As an added extra... I find the wisest way to hard-boil eggs is to put all the raw whole eggs (as many eggs as you like as the number of eggs you will be boiling has nothing to do with this cooking method) into a pot that has a tightly, snugly fitting cover of its own -- then cover all the eggs, filling the pot, with cool or lukewarm tap water until there is more than one-inch of water covering the egg that is on top of all the eggs in the pot. Then, on a high-flame, bring the water to a full, rolling boil... the very minute the eggs reach that full, rolling boil, remove the pot from the stovetop to a nearby waiting trivet and IMMEDIATELY put the cover on the pot completely covering the pot TIGHTLY and allow the eggs to continue to cook in the hot water (right on your tabletop, yes, without any flame underneath it) still in the pot for EIGHTEEN minutes. After the 18 minutes, remove the cover and bring the pot to your kitchen sink, gently and carefully pour out the still very very hot water and refill the pot with the coldest water you can get your tap to produce. Let the eggs just sit in the very cold water for a minute or two and then refill the pot again with more of the coldest water you've got. And you will have perfectly hard boiled eggs (which will also be remarkably easy to peel -- THAT is the secret to easy egg-peeling, immediately rinsing the cooked eggs with the very coldest water you can). I got this egg-boiling method from the old Betty Crocker cookbook and I was happily amazed to realize that it really works -- PERFECT hard-boiled eggs EVERY single time -- and NEVER any soft uncooked spots inside the eggs either. It's just great.
Reply:A tablespoon of white vinegar in the water when you boil them !! Works everytime.
Reply:i learned how to do that when i was about five, what the hell has happened to the world... ;-) anyway, you take your boiled egg out of the pan and put it under the cold tap for a couple of seconds immediately. that process is called refreshing and detaches the shell from the egg. :-) btw, what other eggs would you have if not fresh chicken eggs? seems like i've missed out on another covenience food nightmare...
Reply:You're talking about boiled eggs? Try shelling them when they're still warm. Also, press on the eggs, rolling backwards and forwards. The shells are supposed to come off easily, but not always the case

Is spitting sunflower seed shells on the road considered littering?
When I drive and eat sunflower seeds sometimes I spit them out my window if I dont have a bottle, so could a cop pull me over for this?

What are River Shells & do they contain a Type Of fish like the Sea Shells????
I found a couple Shells at the Green Cove Maarina!
What are River Shells %26amp; do they contain a Type Of fish like the Sea Shells????
Fresh water shells are molluscs, just like the marine species. Some are bivalves (clams, mussels, etc.) while others are gastropods (snails). Both these groups are found in both fresh and salt water. Snails of course are also found on land, but bivalves are not.
Reply:no they contain small insects

Two concentric spherical conducting shells of radii R1 and R2 have potentials V1 and V2. Find V(r) b/w shells?
If V2 is for the outer shell and V1 for the inner shell, then whatever is between the shells is V2 - V1 (V(r)). The following integral is from ra to rb (inner radius a and inner radius b)
V(r) = - ∫ E dr (vector E, electric field and vector dr, infinitesimally small radius. It's dr instead of dl since your dealing with radii rather than "regular lengths")
= - ∫ E * dr * cos α (dot product definition)
= - ∫ E * dr * cos0° (the angle between the electric field and dr is 0°)
= - ∫ (2kλ)/r * dr (E = (2kλ)/r since that's the formula got the electric field of a rod (cylinder))
= -2kλ [ ln r ] (evaluated at rb and ra)
= -2kλ ln rb - ln ra
= -2kλ ln (rb / ra)
and that's it

How are shells made?
you know little insects or snails on the coast use old shells as their homes? well, how are those shells made in the first place?
How are shells made?
Hi , sea shells are made by a family of animals known as mollusca which includes slugs, land and water Snails , Bivalves (better known as clams) and even the squid and octopus are included in this family.
In all these animals they share common features that unique to there family..
most of the mollusc family produce a shell of some kind. it is made out of calcium carbonate.. similar to the shells of crabs or even the stoney skeleton of corals.
Calcium carbonat is utilised by seacreatures as a building block as it can be pulled directly from solution in the seawater....
you wanted to know how the shell it made ? ill try and explain ill need to pick an example we'll say a conch shell . a Conch is a Gastropod, meaning stomachfoot in latin.. similar to a giant land snail and the chosen shell for a hermit crab to seek out .
Perfect but tiny snails are produced from sticky eggs deposited on a food source. While devoloping in the egg the embrio snail had allready started making its shell out of calcium carbonate absorbed through the egg wall .. once hatched the snails shell is amazingly thin and fragile . but as they are tiny the hide pretty well .
They eat and grow pertty quicky, so they dont outgrow there shell each evening the snail uses it mantle , which looks like a tongue, to reach out and lay a sticky layer of Calcium carbonate over the outside of the shell..
in snails they do this with a slight twist in the starting point each time, slowly increasing the opening and creating a spiral .
you can age a shell by growth rings similar to aging a tree, look or obvious ridges or bands.
bright colourings and paterns are created specific species genes and also there diet and topography , ie colour if sand around them .
Put some old shells in white vinegar , watch them fizz and disapear into CO2.. proves its Calcium carbonate ..
i hope this helped :)

A shell acts as something of an exo skeleton, protecting the creature and providing support for what would otherwise be a floppy mess of flesh.
Reply:Calcium.
Reply:They are made in China.
Reply:The little creatures that lived in the shells originally, extracted calcium from the water and from the food they ate and excreted it as the calcium rich shell around themselves.
These shells will affect the water quality of your tank by increasing the pH and hardness as they deteriorate. This may or may not be what you want. Ahhhh, the circle of life.
Reply:It's made by the excretion of calcium around the animal. (I could have worded that better!!)
Reply:The sail uses it's saliva to make it's shell. It continuously coats more and more saliva until it's the proper size for the snail.

I have lava and shells from Kaua, what can I do to make these safe for a fresh water tank?
To be honest you can't, both will affect the water conditions simply because of what they are made of. No amount of boiling scrubbing etc will change the fact that shells are made of calcium carbonate. Better to use them for a nice display around the tank.

What are possible ways to use conch shells? Explain How?
I just read about a conch shell yesterday. Read the Lord of the Flies by W.Golding. In the story, the boys blow the conch shell as a signal that a meeting is going to begin. If a boy had the conch, his turn to talk. "in colour the shell was deep cream, touched here and there with fading pink.Between the shell lay eighteen inches of shell with a slight spiral twist and covered with a delicate embossed pattern."
What are possible ways to use conch shells? Explain How?
Here are some posible ways that you can use a conch shell first you can use it as something you can hear the ocean and then you can use it as an object for decorating the house or the kitchen or even bathrooms here are short and sweet ideas you can use an conch shell for!!!

It is still used to make jewelry, and of course you can cut the end off a big one and use as a musical instrument like a horn.

My hermit crab wont change its shell. It has overgrown its old shell, how can i encourage it to change shells?
it also has a piece of shell missing in it. i only got it two weeks ago.
My hermit crab wont change its shell. It has overgrown its old shell, how can i encourage it to change shells?
There is not much you can activly do to make it change shells. Best bet is the following...
Make sure the tank has the proper temp and humidity.. 76-82 degrees F and 75%-85% relative humidity.
Then make sure you have at least 4 shells per crab in the tank at all times... they must be the proper type, size and shape. Smooth on the inside, no rough edges, no holes or cracks. If you have carribean or purple pincher hermit crabs their faves are, Turbos, Murex, Pica and Japanese snail shells. They like round openings.
The size and shape of the opening is most important, making sure the opening is 1/4 of an inch larger than what he is in now. They need to be cleaned with dechlorinated water and left moist.. then the crab shloud change as long as they are the size that he is looking for.
I wish your crab luck!!!!

Having a good supply of changing seashells for your crab is extremely important to maintaining a healthy crab. If a hermit crab does not have a new shell to move into and has out grown the one they are in, they will find some other hollow cover to substitute. While it might be nice to see a hermit crab walking around with a soda cap on their back, they will not survive for long since a cap cannot maintain the moisture a hermit crab needs for survival.
A hermit crab will move into a wide variety of seashells. The key is to pick a seashell that has a slightly larger opening then the one they are in now. Some seashells are very large in size, however have very small openings on them. An optimum seashell would be one with an opening just about the size of the hermit crabs large claw. land hermit crab seashellFor each crab I have a few shells which are just a little bit bigger than their existing shell. When the crab moults (approximately once a year) they need a choice of shells to move into. The change in body size may be small but it will be important that your growing crab needs a choice of shells. They will be very crabby if they do not have bigger shells for bigger bodies.

.
Anatomy: Hermit crabs are invertebrates, animals without a backbone. They have an exoskeleton, an outer shell that provides support for their body but does not provide much protection from predators. They vary widely in color, from red to brown to purple, with stripes, dots, and other patterns. They have ten jointed legs; the front two legs have large, grasping claws (called pincers or chelipeds) and the rear pair of legs are very small. They have a flattened body, sensory antennae, two eyes located at the ends of stalks, and a soft, twisted abdomen (which the hermit crab keeps hidden inside its shell).
The Knobbed Whelk (Busycon carica) is a gastropod, a soft-bodied invertebrate (animal without a backbone) that is protected by a very hard shell. This mollusk is found in shallow waters of the Atlantic Ocean off the east coast of North America from Massachusetts to northern Florida.
The shell: The Knobbed Whelk has a spiral shell with knobs (or spines) along its shoulder. The whelk's mantle, a thin layer of tissue located between the body and the shell, creates the shell. The whelk builds the hard shell from calcium carbonate that it extracts from the seas. The shell is up to 9.5 inches (24 cm) long. The shell is light gray to tan, and often has brown and white streaks.
Reply:Most hermit crabs will move out of their shells when they want to. Unless the hermies are in a shell that is painted and they can not move out of the shell at all, then they will not die due to the shell.
Depending on what size of hermies you have Most of the hermies love the Brown Peth Turbos, Green Turbos, Japanesse Land Snails, Whale Eye Shells. You can go to www.shellhorizons.com you can see what kind of shells I am talking about on there.
Once you have the shells, boil them in the hermie salt water (some sort of Marine Salt or Sea Salt NEVER human salt), leave a bit of the water in the shells but dump out most of it. Let the shells cool in some sort of container that is big enough for the hermies and the shells and while you are letting them cool, give the hermies a bath.
To give the hermies a bath, you use water that you have added declor to get the chlorine and other metals out of it. Then need to get Stress Coat and add one drop of it to the bath water (the declor and Stress Coat can be purchased at any store that sells fish). Turn the water on and put your wrist under the water. When the water feels neutral to your wrist, then you put enough water in a container that will cover the hermies shell with the hermie in it. Put the hermie in upside down, that will usually get the hermies to come out of their shell and move around. That is the main way that they clean their shell is by moving in and out and getting the water to circulate. Also the little legs that help hold the hermies in thier shells will clean the inside of the shell out. Leave the hermie in the water for about one minute and then take it out and put it in another container with extra shells that have some warm water in it. This will usually get them to change shells more often then any other time.
Some hermies like the shells they are in and will not change. Others will want to change several times a day. It will depend on if they have shells that are big enough for them and if they like that kind.

If you could put your left fingers into the opening of the shell following the internal curve and your thumb on the spire (sharp, closed tip, not the open tip), it's a left-handed shell. Right-handed is the opposite. Make sure it has the right sort of shell.

What's the use of the 3 shells in the bathroom in Demolition Man?
I forgot about the movie, until it showed again in HBO. So out of curiousity, does anyone have an idea of the 3 shells? is it in the book?
What's the use of the 3 shells in the bathroom in Demolition Man?
This is the writer's explanation of how the three shells work:
9. For the love of all that is good and Holy.
How do you use the 3 seashells?!

OK, this may be bordering on the grotesque, but the way it was explained to me by the writer is you hold two seashells like chopsticks, pull gently and scrape what’s left with the third. You asked for it…. Be careful what you ask for, sorry.
Reply:I have no clue. Good question i have always wondered the same thing.

What is the process that creates sea shells?
The animals that live in/use shells take in calcium and carbon from the ocean and then secrete calcium carbonate shells. They grow each year the animal lives which is why you can see growth lines on most shells.
What is the process that creates sea shells?
A shell is the hard, rigid outer covering, or integument, present in some animals. More specific scientific names include exoskeleton, carapace, and peltidium. A shell may be made of nacre (a combination of calcium and protein), chitin, bone and cartilage, or silica.
The shell will grow over time as the animal inside adds its building material to the leading edge near the opening. This causes the shell to become longer and wider to better accommodate the growing animal inside. A mollusc shell is formed, repaired and maintained by a part of the mollusc called the mantle. Injuries to or abnormal conditions of the mantle are often reflected in the shell they form and tend. When the animal encounters harsh conditions which limit its food supply or otherwise cause it to become dormant for a while, the mantle often ceases to produce the shell substance. When conditions improve again and the mantle resumes its task, a "growth line" which extends the entire length of the shell is produced, and the pattern and even the colors on the shell after these dormant periods are sometimes quite different from previous colors and patterns. Interestingly, each species of mollusc animals will build the external shell in specific shape, pattern, ornamentation, and color.
Shells are composite materials of calcium carbonate, found either as calcite or aragonite and organic macromolecules, mainly proteins and polysaccharides. Shells can have enumerous ultrastructural motiffs, the most common being crossed-lamellar (aragonite), prismatic (aragonite or calcite), homogeneous (aragonite), foliated (aragonite) and nacre (aragonite). Although not the most common, the nacre is the most studied layer. Shells of the class Polyplacophora are made of aragonite
Nacre is secreted by the epithelial cells (formed by the germ layer ectoderm) of the mantle tissue of certain species of mollusk. Mollusk blood is rich in dissolved calcium. In these mollusks the calcium is concentrated out from the blood where it can crystallize as calcium carbonate. Nacre is continually deposited onto the inner surface of the animal's shell (the iridescent nacreous layer also known as mother of pearl), both as a means to smooth the shell itself and as a defense against parasitic organisms and damaging detritus.

Why do sea snails build their shells in a clockwise direction?
I have shells that all rotate in a clockwise fashion and i want to know why. why dont they rotate in a counterclockwise fashion
Why do sea snails build their shells in a clockwise direction?
As the sea snail grows larger each time they build a larger chamber to live in. The chambers grow in a clockwise or counterclockwise fashion due to fractals - the smaller chambers are exactly like the larger chambers in design. They grow in that shape because that is how their evolution turned out. These things usually arise because they have an evolutionary advantage for being. It may be because it makes it easier to balance the shell than if the shell just grew straight backwards or it may just be that the female of the species evolved to like that shape. No one knows for sure the exact reason why.

Reply:They're superstitious.
Reply:It all depends on which side or which end you look at them from. Their genetics define the way they make them.
Reply:It isn't known exactly why the shells rotate clockwise but an interesting discovery was made from studying core samples that the average water temperature affects which direction the shells coil. As water becomes warmer or cooler, the shells with change from clockwise to counterclockwise. The direction of coiling has been used to track global warming and cooling trends as well as glacial and inter-glacial periods (ice ages).
Reply:It's a torsion thing--a long, long time ago the hypothetical ancestral mollusc evolved torsion, and that is just the way the shell happened to end up coiling.
Evolution of counterclockwise coiling, also known as left-handedness or sinistrality, has evolved independently in several lineages over time; however, left-handed snails can't breed with right-handed snails so unless the mutation for left handedness occurs simultaneously in a large population of snails, and the lefties find each other, it can't take hold.
Reply:Because they all wear Rolex Oyster perpetual motion watches
Reply:Maybe its because it is a forward motion type of thing.
Reply:The answer is unknown (probably the ancestral torsioned molluscs just started that way, and their offspring had that direction built into their DNA).
However, they don't have to: some shells grow in the opposite direction, even within a single species. There isn't any physical or other reason for the shells to grow clockwise. By the way, the torsion (twisting) of the shell is also manifested within the anatomy of the critter that makes the shell. Also, hermit crabs have anatomy (just an external twisting) that makes it much more convenient to use normal shells for protection.

Safe to Eat Egg Shells on hard boiled eggs? I like the crunch! How MUCH calcium?
They are an excellent source of calcium and completely safe ((since you boiled them first )) for you to eat if you chew them up well so the sharp pieces won't raise havoc on your insides.
I actually have a recipe for extracting the calcium from these shells. This calcium is very absorb-able by the body !
Happy crunching ! : )

Recipe for Chewy Taco Shells?
I'm looking for a recipe for making chewy taco shells at home - they are nothing like the ones in the stores. We have two restaurants ran by hispanic people here that serve them in Muskegon, MI, and they are soooo good. I've not been able to get anyone at either restaurant to divulge the recipe.
The shells are made of corn, slightly fried, and have small perforations in them, most likely to keep them from blistering when being prepared.
They contain the same contents as any regular hard or soft shell taco would, they are just in between the two in texture - chewy.
Recipe for Chewy Taco Shells?
I must say, I can't stand the store taco shells, they are so hard and are so bland. the kids don't even like the store ones after i started making my own.
Get a frying pan, some veg oil (or any fat, i think hispanics use lard), and corn shells. Put about a 1/4 inch of oil over a medium-high heat, and then using tongs, fold the taco shell, fry one side, and then flip to fry the other side of the taco. it takes about 15-20 seconds on each side. then drain upside down on papertowls.
Please be careful with grease, we had a grease fire and lost our kitchen!!!!!

Reply:Get your corn tortillas at the store. Heat corn oil on med high heat. You will know its ready when you put a little piece of tortilla in and it bubbles sort of fast and floats to the top. Take your tortilla, fold in half and dip the bottom of the fold in the oil first to make it rounded. Lay it over on one of the sides and let it cook for about 5-15 seconds. Depends on how hot your oil is. You will know its done on that side when it starts to bubble out. Turn over and cook other side the same way. I use two forks for cooking and turning so I can shape them right. I think you can actually buy a mold for this. Drain and put on paper towels.
Reply:Sounds like just homemade corn tortillas, and they dont' use a fancy frying gadget to turn them into a V shape... rather they proably hold them bent a bit under the oil w/ tongs....
Reply:get corn tortillas at your grocery store and fry them in a little bit of cooking oil

Flour Tortillas
Serving Size : 12
4 cups Unbleached all purpose flour
2 teaspoons Salt
4 teaspoons Baking powder
2 tablespoons Vegetable shortening
1 1/2 cups Warm water or more if needed
In a large bowl, stir together the flour, salt and baking powder. With a pastry blender, a fork or your hands, gradually work in the lard or shortening until it is all incorporated. Add enough warm water to make a soft but not sticky dough. Turn out onto a lightly floured board and knead for 5 minutes.
Divide the dough into 1/4 cup (3 oz) portions and form them into balls.
Roll each ball into a flat round about 6 inches in diameter and 1/8 inches thick.
Heat a large heavy skillet over medium high heat. Place the tortillas one at a time into the dry hot skillet; cook until brown on one side, then turn and brown the other side.

Is it safe to put egg shells down the disposal? I heard it sharpens the blades. True?
Egg shells will not sharpen hardened steel. If you have a septic system then do not put shells in disposal. My experience has been if you put to many in at once it clogs the drain pipe. One or two will go down fine. More than that use the trash or feed them slowly.
Is it safe to put egg shells down the disposal? I heard it sharpens the blades. True?
NO .put the egg shells out in you flower beds(or in your compost)to help them grow
Reply:As far as being safe to put down the disposal... absolutely! The rule of thumb is generally if you can bite it, the disposal can take it. I wouldn't say if you can eat it, because who would eat egg shells? Gross... Also, as far as sharpening blades, I have heard that ice cubes can keep your blades in good shape. I have never had a problem with egg shells or ice cubes. Avoid the stringy items, they'll tangle the blades and shaft.
Reply:as far as sharpen the blades i dont think so and having a disposal is wonderful and if you are going to put potatoe peelings or any thing else you have to go slow. I have put everything down mine but i take it slow to. You listen to the diposal and you can tell if it is getting to much to chop everything up and if so you just back up for a while and as far as i know i have lived there for 5 yrs and have not had my pipes pluged up or anything. So you determin what is safe and what is not.
Reply:I've always put the shells in the disposal and never had any problems...only things that shouldn't go in there are stringy items like celery. Oh, and my friend broke their disposal by putting alot of potato peelings down it.
Reply:i heard it was ok. i doubt it would do anything to the blades - good or bad. egg shells arent tough or hard enough to really hurt or benefit anything. (?) the only thing i was told to NOT put down the disposal was long, tough, stringy stuff - like onions. they can get hooked and clog your pipes etc. i think egg shells are ok.
Reply:I agree with the prior poster, potato peelings will kill a disposal better than anything. Our plumber also said not to put down egg shells, or noodles, but the noodles because they will clog pipes even after going through the disposal. I don't believe for a minute that eggshells will sharpen the blades. What they can do is the tiny hard pieces of shell can lodge in the seams of the disposal and eventually cause problems. Best way to use disposal: run hot water before and during use while putting down small amounts of food at a time. Oh, and we replaced the old disposal with the top of the line Insinkerator disposal, says it will even liquefy chicken bones, and it also takes the waste from the dishwasher and grinds it to protect our pipes. And the cost difference wasn't important to us...it was still under $300 for something we use every day.

Only put in a garbage disposal what you eat. It eats what you eat. Anything else will damage it in the long run.
Reply:Egg shells won't sharpen the blade, but they will sure as heck clog the pipe. Try putting 3 or 4 shells after breakfast and enjoy the plumbers visit.
Crush them up and throw into the garden or shrubs. Earthworms will digest the pieces and add to soil activity.
Reply:Fragile egg shells will not sharpen stainless steel. You can put just about anything down your disposal, that you can sink your teeth into. The key is to get a 3/4 hp or bigger if you are going to make it challenging. Make sure you run 20 to 30 seconds of water to flush it through the drainage system. I just cut up watermelon rinds a put it down my pipes, don't shove it all at once and you wont need to call someone like myself....A Plumber. But if you do have a garden or even a flower bed toss them in there it is great compost.
Reply:I don't know where you live but here in Canada all organic waste is composted. They provide the containers, one for the house %26amp; one for outside. They pick them up weekly.I myself use all organic material in the garden.
Reply:I've never had problems with putting egg shells down the disposal. I can't speak on whether it sharpens the blades, but it didn't have any adverse effect.

Anybody know where to get chocolate shells (half white/half brown) that have small toys in them? Edible & fun
I can't remember the name of them, but they are edible and contain small toys which take from 1-4 steps to put together. Would be great wedding or party favors. Think they originated in another country, but not sure.

Why are pistachios always distributed in shells?
All other nuts can be found out of shells, but not pistachios
Why are pistachios always distributed in shells?
I have seen them out of shell in cans but on an episode of Good Eats Alton Brown said that it prevents them from growing rancid. Nuts have a lot of oil and it makes them go bad.
Reply:so they can be christmasey (red on the outside, green on the inside)..
Reply:They are also distributed in their skin. The shell is beneath the skin... and the ones that are sold in the shell are usually cooked. If you buy the ones that are in the skin you would see that the shell is not that hard. And they are very fresh when you buy them in their skin.
Anyways you could also buy them without the shells.
Reply:i bought some at wal-mart,a big tub of them

What substance in crustacean shells make them "crack"?
be specific!
What substance in crustacean shells make them "crack"?
Most of acrustacean's shell is made from chitin which is a polysaccharide. It is this that gives the shell its strength and makes them crack when forced open.

The amount of shells in atoms?
I'm reading something here, and calcium has 4 shells and silicon only has 3 shells? What gives?
The amount of shells in atoms?
Electrons are arranged around an atom in what are called orbitals. These orbitals are denoted as S, P, D, F, starting with S and moving from there. The first orbital S can hold only two electrons, the second P can hold six, the third D can hold ten and F holds 14.
The first shell contains one S orbital and covers the elements H and He, the second shell contains an 2S and 2P orbital and covers the elements Li through Ne on the periodic table. The third shell contains an 3S and 3P orbital and covers the elements Na through Ar, this includes the Silicon you were wondering about, and the fourth shell has a 4S, 3D and 4P orbital and covers the elements K through Kr on the table, which includes Calcium as you were asking about.
In short, elements in each period (horizontal grouping of elements, reading from left to right) are contained in the same number "valence shell" (outermost shell of electrons) and as you go down a group (vertical grouping of elements) say from oxygen to sulfur you will find that oxygen has a valence shell of 2 while sulfur has a valence shell of 3.
I hope that wasn't too dense for you, it certainly was a lot of information, and I hope it helps answer your question.
Reply:Because Calcium has more electrons than Silicon. The 3rd shell can only hold 8, when you want to add more electrons, you need another shell.
Reply:Each atom actually has ALL the possible energy shells... they're just "there" in the sense that they are energy levels which electrons CAN occupy. Of course, atoms only have a defined number of electrons so each atom will only have so many shells fully or partially populated.
The rule for the number of electrons which each shell can contain is simple: Number = 2N^2, where N is the shell number.
So.. 1st shell (K-shell) can contain 2
2nd (L-shell) : 8
3rd (M-shell): 18
and so on.
So the difference between Calcium and Silicon will be the number of electrons and therefore how many shells are populated.
It actually gets a bit more complex than that for higher atomic numbers... Each shell has a number of sub-shells (which are labelled s, p, d, f, ..) and as the atomic number increases the energy levels of the subshells tend to overlap a bit. That means that sometimes the N+1th shell will start to fill before the Nth shell is completely full.
Try to look for "electron configuration" tables for the elements and follow how they fill as the atomic number increases and you'll see what I mean.
Reply:If you look at the periodic tables of elements youll see that Si is on the 3rd line making it have 3 shells, Ca is on the 4th making it have 4 shells.
I dont knwo how much chemistry you know but, it has to so with the number of electrons in each shell. Si has the the first two shells full and it has 4 electrons the 3rd shell, Ca has the first 3 shells full and 2 electrons in the 4th shell. if you want further explanation i can give it to you.
Reply:That refers to atoms' electron configurations. If you have not covered these yet in class, look them up on the Internet.
The shells are the "s" orbitals around an atom. They are sphere-shaped, and can hold up to two electrons per shell. They and "p" orbitals (propeller-shaped) compose the valence shell of the atom.
Different atoms have different numbers of shells due to their electron configurations and energy levels. Again, look this up if you haven't learned about it in chemistry class yet.

slow down and let someone else get hit...if you time it right, you'll get 1st place back while the other kart is recovering.
but if you've already been targeted, you'll still get hit even if you drop place...so the best thing to do in that situation is to try get in a position so other karts get hit too with the little aftershock

What will i do to make an investigatory project about tahong shells?
I have NO idea what a tahong shell is. But here are some questions to being asking:
What are they made of?
How big are they?
Where do I find them?
What lives inside of them and why are they gone?
What can they be used to make?
What role do they play in my culture and why?
Why are they shaped the way they are shaped?
Once you make some general observations about these shells the ideas will come POURING out. Forcing a hypothesis out of thin air is like writers block. Just start looking at these stupid shells, make some notes and sketches. Count things about them and make charts. Note the color and mass. Before long you'll be so curious about the damn things that you'll want to know EVERYTHING about them and ONE of those questions will burn inside you and THAT is the one that you should do your project on.
Now GET TO WORK! You never know what you might find or how your discovery could change the world overnight!

Now GET TO WORK! You never know what you might find or how your discovery could change the world overnight!

Why are the shells of salted eggs colored red?
The commercial salted eggs are duck eggs and always dyed red to differentiate these from fresh eggs; as these are also packaged, transported and displayed in egg trays used for fresh eggs.
Why are the shells of salted eggs colored red?
In the USA, I thought it is pickled eggs that are colored red. The red is due to beet juice.
The color is just a symbol people use to differentiate the pickled egg from a regular egg.
Also, pickled eggs are typically found in the old-timer bars.
Reply:it's basically just to differentiate it from the usual eggs..that's what i know..
Reply:I think its colored red just to differentiate it with the fresh chicken eggs in the market.

Reply:to distinguish them from "regular" unsalted eggs.. By the way, just in case you didin't know, true "red" eggs are duck not chinken..

How do peanut companies get the peanuts out of the shells?
i know it would take FOREVER if they had people take them out one by one, theres so many peanuts in cans on store shelves for that!!

Reply:Flossing is the best way to remove food and plaque from between the teeth, an area the toothbrush cannot reach. Use the following technique:
Cut off about 18 inches of floss and wind most of it around the middle finger of one hand. Wind the rest around the middle finger of your other hand, to take up the floss as you use it.
Gently, using a sawing motion, pull the floss between 2 of your teeth, being careful not to snap it into the gums.
When the floss reaches the gum line, curve it into a C-shape against one tooth and slip it into the space between the tooth and the gum until you feel resistance.
Holding the floss tightly against the tooth, move it up and down away and toward the gum, scraping the side of the tooth.
Wind the floss around the middle finger, so that a fresh section is in position and repeat for all teeth. Not using a fresh section of floss can spread bacteria and could cause a gum infection (gingivitis).
Remember to floss the backs of your rear 4 teeth.

Why are my snail's shells getting white and look like they're disintegrating?
They look like they are disintegrating because they are. Snails need to be fed food that has a good source of calcium, they don't live off of algae like a lot of people think. If you can't supply them with that then you can add calcium to the water itself in the form of liquid calcium, Kents liquid calcium is good and you should be able to find it in most pet stores.

it disintegrate because it's dead... remove them from the tank because the dead snail will foul the water.
oh, and their shell needs calcium or it'll get weak too.. the calcium is already in your tap water.. just make more frequent water changes.

Why can't you buy brazil nuts in their shells any more?
This was asked recently. In the USA there has not been a problem getting them, but I found out that in Europe the import of them was restricted recently because of a fungus that was found on the shells. I thought the restriction had been lifted but maybe not. The fungus is apparently thought to cause cancer.

How is atomic size actually determined? Is it the number of protons + neutrons or the no. of electron shells?
Atomic size is empirically determined by x-ray crystal structure. How far apart are bonded atoms in the element? In compunds?
From theory, atom size is typically the 90% probability envelope of electron distribution.
How is atomic size actually determined? Is it the number of protons + neutrons or the no. of electron shells?
The Atomic Number is the number of Protons in the Nucleus, the number of Neutrons determines the isotope.
Reply:by x ray difraction instruments. the size is not the number of protons + neutrons or the no. of electron shells. the size is an average of the radius of covalent bonding in their diatomic structure.
Reply:The atomic radius includes the electron shells. You raise a good point because some of the orbitals theoretically go out to infinity. So the convention is to look at a 90% probability level for the size of the electron shells.

What is cheaper 12 ga or 20 ga shells?
What is cheaper/what is a better gun for clay pigion shotting?
What is cheaper 12 ga or 20 ga shells?
Some 20 ga. is cheaper than 12 ga. but $3 or $4 per box. And at times, you will find them the same price. But the 20 ga. is the perfect upland game gauge. If you go from clay pigeon to real birds, you'll find you'll like the 20 ga. much better.
Reply:i personally prefer 12 gauge cause it has more power but more kick and the ammo prices are mostly the same
Reply:12 gauge is better.* They are both the same price on ammo.*
Reply:20 gauge is better but more expensive.
Reply:20 is cheaper (not by much ) and will b good for shootin clay pigions its less power so you wont get tired or feel like you have been hit in the arm
Reply:they are priced about the same at the store, but if you reload you will find 20 guage to be much less expensive
Reply:You'll find they are usually about the same price. Other rounds like .410, 16 and 28 gauge are higher. All gauges .410 through 12 have the a place in shotguns sports involving clays. Many shooters in the game of Sporting Clays use 12 gauge because of some of the distances involved. Competition skeet sees competitors shoot all of the following: .410, 28, 20 and 12 gauge. Best guns for clays depends on who you ask, but most people who are serious use auto-loaders or over/under shotguns for Skeet, Sporting Clays and 5-Stand. Quality auto loaders tend to cost less than quality over/unders shotguns.

Can crushed shells be bought in garden stores? I have been told they deter snails from flower beds.?
Hi. I use oyster shells in my beds. I've gathered them from all over. Oyster bars, grocery stores, fish markets, etc... I happen to live about 4hrs from the gulf coast so I can take a drive down south and get sacks of them. I boil them for about 1hr and then let them dry in the sun for a couple days. Crush them in a potato sack and mix into your beds. they will help keep snails away. The oyster shells are sharp. Snails are tender. A quick brushby and its lights out for Sam the snail! I'd suggest you not walk barefoot in your garden beds either.. not that you do.. Feet are pretty tender too! One word of caution.. Calcium. Make sure your plants are ok with calcium. Marine shells are made from calcium and your soil will leech the calcium (and other trace elements) out of the shells. This generally isn't a problem, in fact, many garden centers sell powdered shell as fertilizer. Ask your plant person at the garden center how a particular plant will take to calcium, then, start your oyster hunt! It may actually be more fun than gardening!
Course, if you don't want to do all that, eggshells, ashes from the fireplace, or, as the previous poster mentioned, diatomaceous earth. But, where's the fun in diatomaceous earth aside from trying to say it 10 times fast!

Are conch shells legal to bring home?
I am travelling to the Dominican Republic and I want to bring home a conch shell. I have heard that they are illegal to bring out of the country. Not sure if this applies to all countries or just some. I live in Canada. Anyone know for sure?
Are conch shells legal to bring home?
they're totally legal, I've lived in the Dominican Republic 3 years and have had people come to visit, many brought home conch shells and none have had a problem.
Reply:I'm not sure about Canada as I live in the US, but I brought a conch shell home from the Cayman Islands about 8 years ago and that was fine. You could always ask someone in customs upon arrival before say finding/purchasing one only to not be able to bring it back.
Have Fun!
Reply:yes , it's not a problem, you can bring a few , but not a big shopping bag of conch shell , jejejejj....anyway my email ia muelito69@hotmail.com for more imformation , have fun.

Eggs shells? are they good for the soil.?
what's your experience?
what other left over food items can be good for soil.
Eggs shells? are they good for the soil.?
yes; they are. They naturally restore calcium. Also, birds eat it %26amp; it's used by them for laying eggs. Crush it up first.
Any raw food leftovers are good, like celery or fruits/veggies that've gone bad, as they decompose %26amp; make good compost. Meat is NOT good.

what other left over food items can be good for soil.

What's a good way to fix my capiz shells to a picture.....?
We painted a canvas black and were hot glueing them to the canvas, but when you stick them on the glue makes a darker spot in the middle of the shell, and kinda screws it up..... anyone have a good idea to fix the problem???
What's a good way to fix my capiz shells to a picture.....?
If you're using acrylic paint on the canvas, you can use acrylic gel as a glue. It dries clear %26amp; will stay stuck to the paint. The best is Golden High Solid Gel - it shrinks less than any other gel, and I've used it to adhere found objects onto paintings.

Why do peanuts that come in shells have only one or two peanuts in them?
Seriously... How many would you like there to be? Peanuts aren't manufactured... they grow that way. They are what they are. Sometimes there's 1. Sometimes there are 2, and sometimes there are 3 in a shell.
Why do peanuts that come in shells have only one or two peanuts in them?
every so often you will find 3 or even 4, just a nature thing.
Reply:Ive seen plenty with three or four
Reply:Well first of all.. the peanuts are grown in the shell underground and then when harvested they are washed and roasted. Some times you can find a shell that has 3 peanuts in it but not very often. When the peanuts are in a can/jar/bag remember.. they started out in a shell

Can you have popcorn without the shells? If so, how?
i'm just wondering if there's any way to take the shell off of the kernels before you pop it so you won't have the hard shells that stick in between the gums and teeth after they've popped...i'm just curious whether it's possible or not...
Can you have popcorn without the shells? If so, how?
No, if you take off the "shells", then the popcorn won't pop. The way it works, when you heat the kernels of popcorn, the moisture inside converts to steam. The "shell", actually called the pericarp by botanists, holds in the steam until POP! It explodes, and the escaping steam puffs up the inside (called the endosperm) unto a fluffy yummy bit of popcorn.
Take off the pericarp, and what you get is soggy corn mush.
I don't like those bits in my teeth, either, but it's worth it for the tasty goodness of the popcorn. I think I'll go make some right now.

One thing I do not like about popcorn is that you gotta floss after you eat it or you go crazy....

Reply:Its not possible because the "shell" your referring to is actually the kernal which is what pops to make popcorn. Just floss after eating it like I do...lol
Reply:cut em in half
Reply:Nope it is not possible. It is, in fact, the unusually hard shell of the "popcorn" type of corn which makes it possible to pop the corn in the first place. If the shell (kernel) wasn't so hard it wouldn't be able to withstand the pressure of the expanding water long enough fo the corn to pop. Popcorn is actually its own type of corn, just like sweet, field, indian, etc...

Why do electrons move in shells rather than in fixed orbits?
im doing a school science project and i need a relivitively basic explanation. thanks
Why do electrons move in shells rather than in fixed orbits?
Quantum mechanical objects (ie, very small, like the size of electrons in atoms) don't have fixed speeds and positions. So you can't talk about their orbits as you would in classical mechanics. Their properties (such as position) are described by a wave function, a function which obeys a differential equation (Schrodinger's equation). For an electron in an atom, there are only certain, specific, solutions to that equation that are mathematically possible. So the electron is limited to being in one of these wave functions (or a combination of them--that's allowed, too), which give you a probability distribution for its position, the shell. The electron isn't exactly moving in the shell (it may or may not have orbital angular momentum). It's just hanging out there. It doesn't need to decide exactly where it is unless you go looking for it.
Reply:Electrons do not move in the way big objects like e.g. cars move. The motion of objects in the macroscopic world we live in is described by classical physics, the 3 Laws of Newton. But in the microscopic world of atoms, these laws are not valid. Classical physics completely break down at this level.
The laws of physics as we understand them today are not based on classical mechanics but instead on quantum mechanics. These laws are valid also for atoms. When objects become large the quantum laws become more like the classical laws.
Now, the very concept of an object in motion, i.e. an object being at one place at some time and simultaneously having a certain velocity breaks down at the quantum level. This concept of motion can be thought of as an emergent thing that gradually arises when objects become very large.
According to quantum physics, the electron in an atom cannot have arbitrary values for the energy. The state of an electron can be completely specified by specifying the energy, and the so-called angular momentum. These numbers can be given in terms of integers, so called quantum numbers.
According to quantum physics when you have specified these numbers the state of the electron is completely fixed, i.e. there is nothing more to know about the electron. Now, if you were to measure the position of the electron you can still find it in many different places. There is a probability distribution for the position that depends on the quantum numbers.
For an electron in the lowest possible energy the electron can be found with very high probability close to the nucleus. For the higher energies the probability of finding it further away from the nuvcleus becomes larger.
Now if you consider that an electron in some fixed energy state can be found in many different places then that suggest that one should picture the electron being in all the possible places at once in some sense. One can do certain experiments in which an electron can move in two ways from one position to another position. One can then demostrate that it cannot be the case that an electron choses only one path when we don't observe how the electron is moving.
So, to summarize, it is wrong to think of electrons as ordinary objects. Quantum mechancs correctly describes atoms. This theory predicts that the possible states the electrons in atoms are cannot be changed continuously but they are labeled by integers.
Reply:Well the electron isn't a 'thing' as such - there's no way of telling exactly where it is or where it is going to be (well, you can find out one but not both). So instead of giving it a defined orbit we simply give an area in which it can be found at any moment - this area is the 'shell'.
Reply:multiple shells are needed to accommodate the many electrons in heavier elements. this does not affect the way electrons move, they buzz around in the shells as opposed to moving in orbits, their positions are unpredictable.

How do snails get their shells?
They create them.
When a snail grows, the shell has to be enlarged to fit the snail's body. To accomplish that, a snail gradually extends its shell by adding new parts at the shell opening.
The growth process is carried out in two stages: In the first stage the thin, transparant and organic outer layer (periostracum) is created, on which the calcified inner layers are deposited in the second stage. The shell material is secreted by specialized cells of the mantle.
Apple snails can grow their shell very fast under the right conditions: peak rates of 0.5 cm (0.2 inch) new shell a day do occur.

Are turtles shells supposed to peel?
i have a painter turtle and i know they shed, but the sections of its shell are peeling off individually. im not sure if its supposed to do that. it is only 1 1/2 inch turtle so is its shell just growing? and thats what it does?
Are turtles shells supposed to peel?
Each scute will shed independently. To make sure everything is OK, check these details out:
- paper thin sheds, not thick or fingernail like.
- Tissue under sheds should look like the normal shell, not different than the others.
- Under the shed should be clean- no discoloration, discharge, or odor.
For more, try the sites below:
Reply:as they grow segments of shell peel off like a thumbnail size piece. be sure turtle has area to get out of water so it can bask in the heat and keep it's shell hard. otherwise sometimes a serious issue of shell rot can occur. get a book at the local pet store and read up some on your turtle.
Reply:Yes it means he is growing. The peeling is normal and analogous to a snake or a lizard shedding it skin. Just make sure they have room to get out of the water and on to dry land.

Reply:yes, their shell molts to let the shell grow

Why do the atomic shells have certain number of electrons in them?
In fact the number of electrons in a shell is limited by these laws
Each electron in a number is characterized by 4 four numbers called quantic numbers
First the principle of Pauli states that 2 electrons in an atom must differ at least by one quantic number or expressed differently in an atom 2 electrons can not have the same 4 quantic numbers
secondly if n is the number of the shell (n is a positive integer n=1, 2, 3, and so on), the second quantic number is positive, lower than n with the number zero possible (l = 0,1,.., n-1)
the third quantic number is also an integer with values lying between -l and +l with zero possible
the fourth quantic number spin has only 2 values +1/2 or -1/2
these considerations limit the number of electrons in a given shell
example n=1 so l=0 since l must be lower than n , m is also equal to zero and only the spin can differ the two electrons

Why can shotguns only hold 3 shells?
I heard that the law only permits for a shotgun to hold no more than 3 shells. What is the reason for this? I can't make sense of that law.
Why can shotguns only hold 3 shells?
The law will only apply if you are in the field hunting. It has to do with conservation and keeping sport in sport hunting.
You can have as many shells as a gun can hold while not in the field hunting. My shotgun holds 8 rounds, for example.
Reply:One of my shotguns holds eight 2 3/4" shells. It"s a
Win. 1300 Defender.
Waterfowl hunters are limited to three shells. That's federal law and has been since I first started duck hunting in th 1960's. Every shotgun I've ever owned has a plug that you can remove to shoot more than three shots. Report It
Reply:In the magazine tube is a limiter plug ( that is removable).
To my knowledge the only 3 shell limit is for hunting various types of game animals and birds.
This very from state to state as to shell limit and species.
But for home defense or target shooting In my state there is no limit to number of shells it can hold.
As to other states you need to check out the laws.

Reply:Like everyone else said, it's because of hunting regulations.
I have a Beretta Xtrema2 that holds 12 shells.
When I go hunting, I'm forced to plug my Remington 870 that would otherwise hold 6 shells.
Reply:3 rounds with plug in. law only when hunting certain animals, ducks and doves, quail. most can hold 5. you can buy mag. extensions that can make your gun hold 8 or 9.
Reply:most pump and automatic models can hold 5 shells, if the plug is removed.
the reason for 3 is, for most species hunted the law requires a 3 shell limit. it gives the quarry a "better sporting chance".
Reply:that is the rule for bird hunting. some shotguns only hold 2 in the magazine tube plus one in the chamber. Some hold 5 in the magaxine tube and have to have a removable block installed in the tube for bird hunting to limit it . Some shotguns can hold as many as 9 shells total in certain configurations. But anyway, that's just the way they past the hunting regs
Reply:It a long time federal law that you must have 3 shells in the shotgun for waterfoul hunting. As far as for pheasant (upland bird) hunting you could have as many shells you can put in it. Thats the only thing I could think of for this 3 shells in the shotgun law.
Reply:Mine only hold two, one in the left and one in the right barrel of each. The reason for the limitation when hunting is that some (and I've known a few of these) older guys in their youth would go out and murder a hundred ducks in a morning. This was just one way of calming them down.
Reply:The shotgun can actually hold 5 or more in some, but the law states you must have a plug in it which limits the gun to three shells. If you ever need three shots (besides a flock of geese or something), then you dont need to be hunting. It gives the animals a better chance if you can only shoot three times. I dont know about other states, but in mine, if you have the plug out of your gun anytime, even at home locked up, the game warden can legally take your gun.
Reply:in my state, that only applies while hunting birds. i assume its to be a little bit more sportsmanlike to the duck or whatever fowl you hunt.
Reply:You have to realizre that years ago state and federal natural resources departments established the 3+1 policy in order to limit magazine capacity for the in season licensed hunting of legal upland game. This is the only reason that this was required. You'll find that for any other application or use of a shotgun (example" home %26amp; self defense) these laws/regulations do not apply. You can easily purchase and mount magazine extensions/extra long springs, that will in some cases allow your Pump Action Shotguns to hold 9 shots. Semi-auto shotguns do not have this capability unless they are designed and manufactured with an extended magazine capacity tubes. Since these are gas operated the parts that provide this action are in the way and can't be removed or moved , to make room.
Reply:shot guns can hold more but in most cases if you are using them to shoot water foul(in Arizona) you must have it plugged this is so you don't fill the air with shot. and is more sportsman like. on other small game you only need the shot gun to fall within the guidelines for hunting. as for home defense you can have as many as your local laws will permit. (I don't think there is a limit in Arizona. they make a mag extender for my shot gun to hold 10 shells and it can be bought over the counter.
Reply:I agree my semi auto shottie will hold 5 (4+1) without the plug and only 2+1 with the plug. Maybe the lawmakers figure that if you can't hit what you want in the first three shots you should let the poor thing go. I always wondered if that limit applied if you are out on a trap or skeet range since technically you aren't really hunting live animals although the things are called clay 'pigeons' LOL.
The other weird thing is that in a lot of states or maybe all of them hunting isn't allowed on sundays but fishing is go figure. Whats the difference between hunting on sat or any other day of the week and sunday. I think it might be some kind of religious thing?
Reply:thank bill clinton
Reply:I'd think you'd be "happy" about that.
But, the reason is so that if you should have an accidental firing, only 3 rounds are availiable to go off.
In addition, the only shotguns that can hold more than one round, are semi-automatics and pumps, and if you quickly shoot them, the recoil of the gun is powerful enough to dislodge the stock of the gun from your shoulder, thus giving you no control over the gun as it continues to fire.Very dangerous.
There 'is' a way to load the gun with up to 5 shells though, you must remove the plug from the magazine.

Why does name of the shells of atoms start with k not with a?
the names of shells star either with 1,2..... or by k ,l,m............
why start from k not by a
Why does name of the shells of atoms start with k not with a?
Likely a series of letter designations was needed where none of the letters would easily be confused with another popular use. For example the first seven letters a through g would include g which is used by physicists to designate gravity. X, y and z are often used to designate unknowns or the axes of coordinates. Letter I is often avoided because it is a Roman numeral. Still when discussing (say) P, it must be made clear that it is defined as an electron shell to avoid confusion with (say) power as in P = EI.
Reply:The electron shells K and L were originally named B and A but were later renamed in order to leave room for further discoveries but none were made.
Reply:It may be because of the language of the scientist that discovered it. Hence Tungsten being abbreviated by a "W" since it was founded in Germany. It is called Wolfsten there, or something close.
Or it could be because there is something else science related that starts with an "a." Which is why ampere is abrreviated "amp" instead of "a"
Or it can be because "a" is a word.
Just some ideas, may not be correct.

What size shells will a 1986 remington 1100 magnum shoot?
got it the other day from cabellas but it didnt come with any information with it.
What size shells will a 1986 remington 1100 magnum shoot?
Look on the left side of the barrel just below the rear sites. My 1100 has the shell size stamped in the barrel.
Reply:The Rem 1100 comes in several guages,i.e. .410, 32 ga, 28 ga, 20 ga, 16 ga %26amp; 12 ga. This info will be on the bbl. Since it has the designation "Magnum" it will be capable of cycling either the 2 3/4" or 3" magnum. I don't believe the Rem 1100 of 1986 was available in 3 1/2 Mag. I own a Rem 1187 at the present.
Reply:depends on the barrel
Reply:Read on the side of the barrel. It will tell you what it is chambered for.
Reply:The magnum was designed to shoot 3 inch shells, however, beware!!.
The barrels can be changed so you need to check on the barrel to see if it is chambered for 2 3/4 or 3 inch shells. You can shoot either in a 3 inch, but, only 2 3/4 in the 2 3/4 inch chambered barrel. The 1100 is a great shotgun-enjoy!
Reply:That's why you ask the guy in the gun dept. "what size shell does this shotgun take?" before you purchase the weapon.
HS, I hope you don't live/hunt near me.
Reply:Read the side of the barrel. If it says 12 gauge - 2 and 3/4 inch then buy 12 gauge 2 and 3/4 inch shells. If it says 12 gauge - 3 inch shells then you can buy either.
I would check and see if the gun has a choke installed as well. If it does, you might possibly have trouble shooting slugs out of it.

Using a 12-Gauge for home protection what shells are best? slug, bird, buck, swan etc?
At point blank range with a 12 gauge does it even matter?
Using a 12-Gauge for home protection what shells are best? slug, bird, buck, swan etc?
At point blank range, the type of shell you use is less important, true. However, really small birdshot still doesn't penetrate all that deeply, which can result in massive wounds that cause death, but that death may be minutes away when seconds count.
On the flip side, slugs have such great punching power they might end up three walls down.
The best choice seems to be a comprimise, buckshot. For indoor-outdoor useage, 00 buck is great. For indoors only, where the ranges are guarnteed to be shorter, 4 buck is the best selection.
Reply:BB is a good choice but most BB shot is steel and it will penetrate a wall much easier than lead.A #2 lead shot is easy to find and it will cause someone to have a very bad day if they are hit buy it.
Reply:what matters more is where you live......say... if you live in a Condo, your neighbors do not want a deer slug to pass on thru, so you would want to think about that.....
and even with bird shot, at point blank range, you are not going to have much spread so aiming is vital.......and also if you can cycle your pump action shotgun , that has a distinct sound that catches peoples attention...
Reply:Point blank....anything that comes out of that barrel is going to put some asshole on the floor...but if you want to make sure you hit them, use some 00 buckshot.
Reply:Number 4 BB shot is all you really need to get the job done.*
Reply:Nothing smaller than #4 shot. I use 00 buck. The animal (human) you are trying to shoot is about the same mass as a deer. If the goal is to disable, then do not use anything you would not use on deer. #4 shot may have penetration issues with heavy clothing or against a large person. Be wary of the direction you shoot, since nearly any firearm will penetrate interior walls.
I have since switched to an AR-15 Carbine for home defense. .223 does NOT penetrate through both sides of a interior wall due to its high velocity causing the bullets to fragment. .223 also penetrates body armor quite well, which our local homegrown home invasion artists have taken to wearing lately.
Make sure you have a good brihgt tactical light on your gun (Surefire G2 or such) to make sure you identify your targets before shooting. Also a bright light at night can be a great nonlethal weapon.
Keep the gun in "ready to go" condition. Racking the slide scares the bad guy off on TV, but in real life you have just let him know where you are and how you are armed. Stealth and defense are your one advantage, racking gives that all away, especially against an aggressive attacker. Carry extra ammo on the gun (stock loops or receiver plate) since you do not know how many shots it will take to win...
Reply:Even 7 1/2 birdshot is good for home protection. At 25-30 ft. the pattern is very tight [about 8-10"], because the shot does not begin to disperse until about 40 feet after it leaves the barrel. Birdshot is not overpenetrative, so you are not going to penetrate the wall and kill some innocent people in the next room.
Reply:If you really want to get your point across, shake and bake him with these.

Should be just what you are looking for.
I would follow these up with buckshot.
Reply:2 3/4 #4 shot or #4 buckshot. Slugs are not good for home defence.
And what is swan? The bird? Or swan shot? Wonders....
Reply:#6 will take-down any intruder at close range as you will find in any appartment. Anything bigger is just risking overpenetration and the lives of your neighbors. No need for 12 gauge "magnum" shells either!
I seen the results of someone being shot with a 20 gauge loaded with #6, nearly ended the guys life!
Reply:I agree with cycling the shotgun. That is a sound that no one will misinterpret. Once they hear that, they will turn and run. No shots fired but feel free to stick your head out and remind them not to come back. Otherwise, if you insist on having that baby loaded and ready to fire, make sure you are protecting your neighbors too.
Note, children may not recognize the sound of a shotgun action closing... so if the 'intruder' keeps coming, announce that you have a gun. This may save an innocent life.
Reply:In my house, the master bedroom is at the end of the hall and the little one's rooms are on the left hand side, more towards the area from which an intruder would travel. Meaning, if I came out of my room and shot down the hall, the shot would pass by the door of my daughters' rooms. For this reason I've loaded the mossberg 500A with a #6 lead turkey shot rather than buckshot. The walls/solid wood doors would slow stray #6 much better than buckshot.
The good news is that as close range, with no barriers, any type of shotgun load could be lethal.
Here are a couple of websites you may find interesting. The first has specialty shotgun shells as an altenative to bird/buck shot and the second deals with the lethality and patterning of shotgun blasts.

Reply:6 shot to bb shot you live in a apartment building slugs you will be shooting the neighbors to #6 - BBB will stop in the wall but will take down an intruder with a point and shoot you do not have to be dead on to hit

anything is fine.

these may seem like oddballs but i would hate to see you imprisoned for shooting someone who is on the other side of the wall.
do not use slugs, use medium birdshot or small buckshot.
Reply:Buckshot
Reply:Load your first 3 rounds #4 Birdshot, and last 3 rounds #4 Buckshot. If you can't stop an intruder with the first 3 rounds, you will definitely stop him with one of the last 3 rounds. None of these should penetrate to a neighboring unit.
Reply:It seems pentration is an issue ofr you. You definitely don't wanna hit you neighbors. birdshot will do fine, unless its legal to shoot trespassers as they walk in. In my state, laws pretty much state he'll be within 10 yards, so birdshot will do just fine.
More ouch? then buckshot. 000 is really unneeded, 00 is fine. it'll shred your bad guy and shred any walls or furnishings between him and you, so watch where you shoot that.
And point-blank. I don't own a shotgun, but at the very least the attacker will get some serious burns from burning powder. I fired some shotguns before, it sure as hell won't blow anyone away (mythbusters proved that), but it will shred that person up really bad. He'll probably lose his head or similar body part (or have a giant gaping hole all the way thru). Anyway, you won't get much spread, but you will get maxiumum damage and lots of blood/gore.
Do Not take boker's idea seriously. It'll be a flamethrower, but you'll also burn the apartment down. And it wont cycle safe in many guns.
Reply:Double ot buck, high brass. It holds 15, 30caliber balls in one shell. It will go through or stop anything.
